My 1986 Sapphire Blue 944 - Never ending Project - Aberdeen

Hello Folks! Wanted to get more involved with other 944 owners this year and actually do some events/runs so decided to join the forum with the intention of becoming a Member at some point.

My mum has had 2 944 N/A automatics and while i've always liked them, I really made my mind up after stopping in by the Porsche Museum on the way home from my banger rally to Rome last year. I bought my 944 at the end of last July from a bloke in Kidderminster, then drove it back to Aberdeen. There were a few niggles and a clunk which I originally suspected engine mounts turned out to be a clutch. In for a penny in for a pound I thought and put the car in for a clutch and belts also. 99% I always do my own work to cars, but I was needing a car asap and I figured a clutch job was probably a bit out of my depth as a driveway mechanic! The car itself was quite cheap however so I wasn't too annoyed. Its a 944 Lux and has 173,000 but a monumentally packed service history. The amount of receipts and stamps is ridiculous. Its had a respray in 2011 and its had a full black leather interior. Its got the toast rack and front lower valence, as well as the 23mm front arb and 14mm rear arb. I run about with no carpets because the hatch/sunroof circuit is playing up and I got fed up of removing the carpet to check the rear relays. Plus I love the noise so its just ace.

But anyway in between then and December I have done loads of jobs in order to make this quite a fun little car. I'm a keen mechanic and quite confident to tackle most anything to be honest. In mid December I bought a BMW E34 for £500 odd as i'm using it in a banger rally in August. Decided this was the perfect opportunity to take the Porsche off the road and fettle it over the winter. The plan is to get the car back on the road some point in the first week of March and to do the North Coast 500 in it. Something i've wanted to do for ages :)

Anyway here is a bit of progress in pictures. Most of the stuff i've done has been mechanical so it hasn't really changed visually. That's soon to change though!

On the way home after I bought it:

And since then:

That's a pretty looking car. Don't hack the appearance too much. I prefer it with the cookier cutters than with the Cup2 wheels; I (almost) always think that cars look better with their original wheels on them.

Kidderminster, eh? That was my childhood home ....

Hi Garth, and welcome to 944 ownership - sounds like you've dived right in! Please keep posting as the project goes on. I tend to agree with Oli on the originality side of things, but it's your car - your choice!
If you'd like to come and meet some of the PCGB members in your area before you commit to membership, the next regular meet is at the Lairhillock, around 8pm in the bar on Thursday 4th February, and you'll be made welcome. Take a look at the Region Pages on the Club website too.

Cheers folks, although I think I've maybe posted the pictures a bit odd! The top is when I bought it and the bottom is how it is now! I just posted that as a reference to see everything I've done :)

For all its worth cookie cutters are probably my favourite 944 wheels and I actually picked them up on the way home from buying it! Despite being a late dash car I'm still early offset so the cup 2s looked awful.

Sounds good about the meets. Still driving around in the e34 at the moment so don't look quite as enthusiastic!

I agree about preferring the cookie cutters - but I didn't think they were original on series 2 cars ?

That's lovely, looks in great nick too.

I think it'd look even better with Teledials, which is probably what it would have had originally, but the Cookie Cutters are definitely nicer than the Cups, which I think are off a Boxster? My 968 Sport had Cup 2's and they don't have the slight twist that your wheels have, pretty sure they're off a 986 Boxster.

Yup, and as I said I pretty much got home with the car and the next morning I had the cookie cutters on! My car is technically an 85.5 which means i'm a late dash model but with early offset chassis etc. It makes it a bit difficult when buying parts sometimes as its a bit of a mixed bag of square and oval parts haha!

Yeah it originally had Teledials. But to be honest i'm not a huge fan of them. The only Teles I would go for are 16" off a turbo. At least the tyre choice would be a bit better! You might be right actually, I think they are early Boxster wheels. Either way I think the rears were 9J and Et55 or something stupid. Looked silly and had the budgetest budgety tyres, which i'd rather do without! I actually had a set of revolution 5 spokes for a while which were going to go on but I was going to have to roll the arches a bit and the paintwork is too nice so I sold them. Really fancy OZ Futuras or Veloces or something though if I can get my hands on a set.

Best looking 944 I've seen had a set of Gemballa Le Mans. Awesome.

They are exceptionally nice. I still have the struggle of finding early offset stuff though which kind of screw me over a bit!

For anyone interested i'll post a link to my thread on RetroRides. I post much more frequently and usually all the dirty oily stuff goes on there so I guess it might be a bit more interesting if you're into that kinda thing? Plus it would take me ages to write and explain every little job i've done onto here!

Just a quick wee update with stuff i've done over the last week or 2.

Gauges out, all electrical connections cleaned, new odometer gear fitted, reflective paint cleaned off and replaced with tin foil, all new dash bulbs and 3 new LEDs for the main gauge lights. Reset all the stops for the needles to standard positions (the fuel gauge needle was sitting a bit low etc.) Also got my momo from a mate (swapped him for the carbon filter that came with the car after I replaced it with a standard airbox) then bought a boss with all the trimmings. Also dismantled the switchgear to take the stalks out. Have bought a new unit but the paint has rubbed off so going to swap my stalks over.

Then I took the front ARB off and the two aux belts. Discovered that the PO had put 20mm bushes on the 23mm bar and the rest were pretty shagged. Painted the lot and rebushed it. I then cut up a plant pot hanger and made some ARB braces. Bunged them all on with 2 new aux belts. Cleaned up all the residual oil from before I did the oil cooler housing seals and put the tray back on. that's the last of the under car stuff out of the way thank god it's freezing at the moment! Also did the gearbox oil, but no photos as i'm sure you can imagine what that looks like!

I've bought manual sunroof latches to convert the sunroof as I cant be bothered with the electrics anymore. Plus I actually prefer the idea of being able to operate it all manually! Also have a fair few little bits and bobs coming from a bloke I know breaking a 944. So in the next few weeks I'll put the cluster back in and finish the interior. Take the shifter out and do the 10mm bolt mod. Do the rear brakes and bleed the whole system. Possibly modify my throttle cam. and fit the sunroof latches, then retrim the carboard in tartan or something interesting.

How are you finding those front ARB braces? Opinion has been divided on them before but I've been tempted to do the same with some bits of old steel.

Also interested to hear what difference you feel with these?

Car is still off the road and will be until the beginning of March unfortunately so can't tell you at the moment! It might be hard to tell whether a difference is coming from all new bushes and/or the braces, but they cost me £0 and took 30 mins to make, so figured even if it does a wee bit of good its a bonus to me!

Loving your work Garth [8D] Keep it up.

Cheers, appreciate it :)

My car handled like a barge with those supports on it. Possibly causing suspension bind. No give in front suspension. Mega grip then let go rapid style. Undriveable in wet.

To be honest thats the first bad review I think i've seen of them. Everywhere else i've looked people can only praise them. Perhaps better with smaller diameter ARBs? Either way they cost me nothing to make and take 15 mins to fit/remove. If the handling is rubbish they can come off, although I have high hopes.
