New Porsche Boxster spied
28 August 2009

The new Porsche Boxster has been spied testing again.

The latest pictures reveal more details of the car, including some of the aerodynamic sculpting that is being used to make it the cleanest, most economical Porsche available when it goes on sale in late 2010 or early 2011.

See the Porsche Boxster spy picture gallery

In particular, the right-hand door is sporting a fin, which is being used to channel more air towards the side-mounted intakes.

Further economy gains are expected to be made from the use of lighter weight materials - every panel is said to be new - and revised engines. Reports suggest that a 200bhp, sub 200g/km of Co2 four-cylinder engine could be available on a new entry-level model.

The photographers are also reporting that the car is slightly longer and wider than the current model. The increased size should help high-speed stability, as well as giving occupants more room.

In addition, the increased dimensions have fuelled speculation that the company is looking to fit a new, even smaller model into the Porsche range at a later date, possibly based on the VW BlueSport concept.

Pedestrian crash protection regulations will also have a bearing on the car's design, with the front end being tweaked as a result.

The new Porsche Boxster is expected to be officially unveiled next spring, at the Geneva motor show.

I think it's a bit further away than press speculation would suggest. Geneva 2010 is in 6 months, and Porsche normally present cars at Geneva that are virtually production ready, with build only a few months away. This would damage current sales that have only just started to pick up with the 'facelift' 987. Looks nice though, with a few Carrera GT design touches.

Is this the next Boxster circa MY2012

http://www.motorauthority.com/blog/1030927_spy-shots-2012-porsche-boxster With the arrival of the new Boxster Spyder in showrooms this month, Porsche’s entry-level convertible range is now and complete and due to be replaced by a brand new model in the next 12 to 18 months. Development of the next-generation Porsche Boxster is well underway and images of a prototype for the car have once again surfaced, this time captured while it was undergoing cold weather testing in Northern Europe. A rumor alleging that Porsche insiders are talking about a lightweight, turbocharged four-cylinder platform for the next-gen Boxster recently began making the rounds. The thought coincides with possible rumors of a revived 914 that could be co-branded by both VW and Porsche, which means the new Boxster could certainly be fitted with a highly charged four-banger. If that’s the case, we're sure Porsche will still offer a six-cylinder option for upper range models. Such a design premise might offer more room to launch a detuned entry-level Carrera also aimed at improving emissions ratings. Even the current six-cylinder Boxster and Cayman, the most efficient in Porsche's line, emit about 222 g/km of CO2--about 100 g/km more than the projected 2015 limits. Whatever Porsche has in store for the new car, we’ll have to wait until its expected arrival in 2011 to find

Will be very interested to see what special edition(s) of the 987 Gen.2 become available to shift the last of them before the next model. Something along the lines of my 550 Anniversary with special paint and lots of extras as standard would be nice!

Those are the same pictures from months ago - I'm sure they are posted somewhere here. Looks nice though [:)]

http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/porsche-boxster/new-porsche-boxster-latest-pics/249326/pictures/new-porsche-boxster-latest-pics.aspx These are the latest spy pictures of the next-generation Porsche Boxster undergoing testing and development work. Work on the Boxster is now at an advanced stage; the test car is sporting less camouflage than in previous spy pictures and our spy photographer noted that work on the rear of the car, particularly the diffuser, appears nearly complete. See the new Porsche Boxster in action The new Boxster, due to be launched within the next 12 months, will be longer and wider than the current model in order to make room for a new entry-level ‘baby Boxster’ based on the Audi R4 and VW Bluesport. The larger dimensions will boost interior space and high-speed stability. The front-end will also undergo styling modifications to increase the Boxster's pedestrian impact safety protection. Extensive aerodynamic work should ensure the new Boxster is the cleanest, most efficient Porsche ever. Like the forthcoming new 911, every panel in the Boxster is expected to be brand new, as well as being lighter than the part it replaces to keep weight to a minimum. The next Boxster will also be a showcase for Porsche’s downsized petrol engines as it bids to cut its overall CO2 fleet emissions. Boxster model line director Hans-Jurgen Wohler told Autocar earlier this year that a four-cylinder engine and a turbocharged three-cylinder engine were under consideration for the car. “A Boxster with a four-cylinder engine, or maybe even a three-cylinder turbo, could produce between 180bhp and 200bhp and emit just 180g/km of CO2,” said Wohler. “Given the Boxster’s history — that it started with a 200bhp, 2.5-litre engine — I think this is possibly something that customers could accept. “We are under a great deal of pressure from the EU law makers to reduce emissions, but we don’t know yet how much we’ll have to come down by,” he added.

Development on the new model is now at an advanced stage and the latest set of pictures show the Boxster in less disguise than in previous spy shots. Although it may look similar to the current model, every panel is new, as is its fabric roof. See the latest Porsche Boxster spy pictures All new parts will also be lighter than the ones they replace as part of Porsche's drive to reduce the weight of its cars to achieve better fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions. Porsche is employing a similar strategy with the next 911, too. The new Boxster, due to be launched within the next 12 months, will be longer and wider than the current model in order to make room for a new entry-level ‘baby Boxster’ based on the Audi R4 and VW BlueSport. All-new Porsche Boxster Lighter and more efficient Boxster on the way!

24th June 2010[FONT=verdana,geneva"] Why change a winning formula? These pictures show Porsche's next-generation Boxster testing, but judging by this prototype, stylists haven't wandered too far from the original design.[FONT=verdana, geneva"][FONT=verdana, geneva"] Despite looking like a facelift, every panel on the car will be all-new, along with a re-designed canvas roof. [FONT=verdana, geneva"][FONT=verdana, geneva"]As with the new Cayenne, which shed 180kg over the model it replaces, Porsche will be looking to use lightweight materials in the newcomer's construction, using lessons learnt from the stripped out Boxster Spyder.[FONT=verdana, geneva"][FONT=verdana, geneva"] Not only will the lower kerbweight help improve handling, but it's also an integral part of the German firm's push to lower [link=http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/spyshots/253516/allnew_porsche_boxster.html#]CO2 emissions[/link] and improve economy across its range.[FONT=verdana, geneva"][FONT=verdana, geneva"] There's no word on what will power the new Boxster, but expect a range of efficient, low capacity turbocharged engines.[FONT=verdana, geneva"][FONT=verdana, geneva"] The all-new sports car will be officially unveiled at the [link=http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/motorshows/geneva-motor-show/]Geneva Motor Show[/link] in 2011 before going on sale later that year[FONT=verdana, geneva"][FONT=verdana, geneva"] Read more: [link=http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/spyshots/253516/allnew_porsche_boxster.html#ixzz0rnhVxt00]http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/spyshots/253516/allnew_porsche_boxster.html#ixzz0rnhVxt00[/link] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]

Depends on where Porsche want the Boxster/Cayman's performance to go - up or down. Up and they're into Carrera territory, down and they create a gap in the product line. I personally think the Boxster/Cayman will remain with six cylinder engines and a new, sub-Boxster model will appear to challenge the likes of the MX-5, etc. with a smaller, perhaps turbo-charged, multi-platform engine.

I think Boxster Cayman are moving further "up market" spec and price wise and all new yet to be named and shamed [:D] lower priced smaller engined entry level models will fill the new void

If it is showcased at Geneva 2011, then production will realistically commence in the summer, making it a 2012 MY.

Rumors of an [link=http://www.motorauthority.com/blog/1037903_rendered-entry-level-porsche-roadster]entry-level Porsche[/link] sports car have been making the rounds [link=http://www.motorauthority.com/blog/1030051_porsche-exec-hints-at-new-entry-level-model]for years[/link], varying in intensity and [link=http://www.motorauthority.com/blog/1042029_vw-boss-hints-at-baby-porsche-roadster-smaller-suv]credibility[/link], but persisting nonetheless. Now it looks like the possibility of a [link=http://www.motorauthority.com/blog/1022843_report-entry-level-porsche-roadster-still-on-the-table]914-esque car[/link] making production may be better than ever, thanks to a new CEO at [link=http://www.allsmallcars.com/make/porsche,new]Porsche[/link]. Matthias Mueller replaces Michael Macht at the helm of the [link=http://www.motorauthority.com/blog/1047026_new-ceo-at-porsche-could-mean-entry-level-sports-car-is-go#]sport[/link] car-heavy yet Cayenne-supported brand as Macht moves over to head up [link=http://www.collegecarguide.com/make/volkswagen,new]Volkswagen[/link] production. Mueller is tasked with boosting sales volume at [link=http://www.thecarconnection.com/make/porsche]Porsche[/link], with the [link=http://www.motorauthority.com/blog/1030927_spy-shots-2012-porsche-boxster]upcoming redesigned Boxster[/link] being the first step on the ladder. That [link=http://www.motorauthority.com/blog/1047026_new-ceo-at-porsche-could-mean-entry-level-sports-car-is-go#]car[/link] may itself more closely approximate an entry-level car, with rumors of a turbocharged four-cylinder base model circulating. But as light and compact as the new Boxster may prove to be, it won't be truly entry-level without a complete overhaul. And moving it that far down-market would either leave a big gap in [link=http://www.allsmallcars.com/make/porsche,new]Porsche's[/link] lineup, or potentially tarnish the higher-end Boxster models like the Boxster S and [link=http://www.motorauthority.com/overview/maserati_spyder_2005]Spyder[/link]. So an entry-level car makes sense--especially if [link=http://www.allcarselectric.com/make/porsche,new]Porsche[/link] intends to make its target of roughly doubling its sales in the medium-term future. The Cayenne is currently [link=http://www.greencarreports.com/make/porsche,new]Porsche's[/link] best seller, thanks in part to its utility, but also to its more competitive [link=http://www.motorauthority.com/blog/1047026_new-ceo-at-porsche-could-mean-entry-level-sports-car-is-go#]pricing[/link] in its base versions--it's actually [link=http://www.thecarconnection.com/make/porsche]Porsche's[/link] least expensive vehicle. What might a less-expensive but still Porsche-badge-worthy [link=http://www.motorauthority.com/blog/1047026_new-ceo-at-porsche-could-mean-entry-level-sports-car-is-go#]sports car[/link] might look like? Start with the [link=http://www.motorauthority.com/blog/1031607_volkswagen-bluesport-roadster-concept-debuts-in-detroit]Volkswagen Bluesport Concept[/link] and re-skin it with [link=http://www.familycarguide.com/make/porsche,new]Porsche[/link] styling. Like the 914 before it, a shared-platform car with high sales volume in other brands could be just the ticket to an inexpensive yet capable car. Unlike the case of the 914, however, [link=http://sportscarmonitor.com/make/porsche,new]Porsche[/link] should be better able to keep its branding unique and differentiate the car with performance and handling improvements. Instead of 914, think reborn 356. At this point, it's all speculation, but looking at the indicators, the timing, and [link=http://www.allsmallcars.com/make/porsche,new]Porsche's[/link] plans, Mueller's appointment as [link=http://www.motorauthority.com/make/porsche,new]Porsche[/link] CEO could be the catalyst that kicks the long-brewing plans into action.
