My 3.2 tuned by Wayne Schofield

In the Scottish region we were lucky to arrange Wayne Schofield to tune couple of cars for us. They included a 968 and my 87 3.2.
Wayne spent a lot of time on my car and I am extremely happy with the end result.
Check out the details in the Scottish region forum.== rolling road pics.
It's great to have your car optimised and pushing out the big BHP !!![:D]
Kinda feels as if my car has spent a month at a health farm!![:D]

Mike,

What did he do? Was it just a tune up or a change of setup?

you certainly seem pleased.

I didn't see the before and after figures on the other thread. What were they?

Your car is (IIRC) not entirely standard, so the headline numbers do not tell the entire story - could almost be considered misleading. Why don't you tell us the full story - plenty of eager listeners here [;)]

I did, and my questions remain asked and unanswered.

The info provided was, and I quote:

"OK the figures for my car were 245 and 251 BUT and it's an important but, the second figure is with the car and surrounding air red hot.
I am assured that a retest on a cooled car with coolish air will give an addnl 4-5 BHP and maybe more. Bottom line I am happy with a 3.2 in the 250+ range (for this week!!)
The car however feels great , much smoother and torquier.
The peak torque figure didn't rise much -- only a couple of lb/ft. but the dyno readout showed gains throughout the RPM range.
For the price charged -- £250+vat this has got to be seriously good value compared to buying an off the shelf chip, not mention the fact that the fueling was remapped and found to be way too rich -- this apart from being wasteful can cause burnout of valve guides etc.
Phil reports similar type of gains with the all important car feels better factor.
There is of course bound to be a placebo effect when having spent money you want your car to feel better, but having done loadsa mods over the years it's nice to be able to report on an affordable way to truly improve the Porsche experience.
Roll on the trackdays, come and have a go if you think yer fast enough.... "

Is the 245 the before figure? Giving a 6hp gain? In what respect does this engine differ from OE? There is some more info regarding torque curve which is interesting but raises more questions. Rev limit is raised to 6930rpm - is this with std rod bolts?

As you should all know by now, the devil is in the details...

Richard,

Don't focus too much on peak power / peak torque, the benefits from a custom map are largely found in the intermediate / part throttle range.

Ok here goes.
Over the years I have had a few mods done and with the exeption of an Autothority hot wire air mass flow sensor , never dynoed the car, I did a dyno 6 yr ago before and after the mass flow sensor and got a gain at 5500RPM of 12 HP
Since then the engine recieved an enlarged throttle body, and presilenser bypass, B&B Tri Flo back box and a custom fabricated ram air ducting to the deeply recessed K&N filter.
I had been really curious to find out what effect if any these mods had done to the car , the exhaust being so loud there is a placebo effect that you think you are going faster.
It ocurred to me that it would be a good idea to get the ECU optimised for my car as the changes were many and I couldn't see how any off the shelf chip could accurately optimise my car.
Enter Wayne S[8|]
Quite simply Wayne has been able to optimise the air fuel and timing on my car resulting in power and torque gains from 1800 -- 6520RPM
The big numbers everyone gets hung up on are peak power which on the second run is only 6 BHP but the car and surrounding air were hot really really hot.
I will try and post the dyno charts but I don't have a web site URL.
At the price charged £293 including Vat I think it was worthwhile getting this done, there is a tremendous shove at about 4800 and no let off until 6600, the engine just feels great simple as that.

To be clear, I have no axe to grind. While I have no personal experience, I am sure Wayne does a top job - he is very well respected by people I trust. If I have other engine mods done I would love to pay him a visit. I also understand that the gains in headline numbers are not always that much with chips - this is exactly my personal experience with the SW chip - and that the real gains are midrange.

I just wanted it to be clear that Wayne had not managed to find 250+hp out of a std 3.2 litre 231(or less)hp lump. It is now clear that we are talking about an intake and exhaust modified engine creating 250hp. Still quite impressive IMHO. Much cheaper than a 3.6 engine swap and probably fairly close in performance.

Richard

OK Richard, there was never any intention of misleading anyone about the state of my engine as I did quote 245 as the start figure.
I guess we will just have to wait for someone to post gains for a standard 3.2, but most of them don't make the 231 they started out with all these years later, I guess if Wayne with his experience is reading this thread he can comment on the gains to be had on a healthy standard 3.2.
While I agree the gains are felt most often in the midrange the top end of my engine is just unreal the way the power keeps on coming.I appreciate in road driving this is hardly useful but it sure is a great feeling.
Are you coming up to Oulton on the 27 March?
Are any 3.2 owners making up the numbers at Oulton? If so say hello my car is GP White with blue wheels reg A9 POR
