Today is the 5th day that I have owned my 911 Turbo. The car has now done 1250 miles since I collected it at the Stuttgart factory on Monday.
I can recommend collecting new cars from the factory, the trip is professionally organised and is very enjoyable.
Following a short flight from Heathrow we arrived at Stuttgart and were promptly taken by Taxi to a 4* hotel in the city. A pleasant meal in the Restaurant (Included) was followed by a good nights sleep. We were picked up at 9:00 the next morning for a 20 minute Taxi trip to the factory. On arrival we were welcomed and invited to visit the museum which is full of famous road and race cars.
At 10:00 the factory tour started which lasted for 90 minutes. This involved a tour of the engine and car production lines. It demonstrated the skilled workforce and the variations in the cars being produced. The relatively small site the factory occupied surprised me together with the fact that all models are made at the same time on the same production line.
We were taken back to the Customer Collection Centre where we were individually taken to our cars. The handover was very detailed and lasted about an hour with the PCM taking up a good proportion of this time.
A photo that had already been taken of the handover was given to us as we departed for lunch at a restaurant on site.
Following a quick lunch (Too much excitement!) we walked back to the Collection Centre and drove the car out of the factory gates at 14:30.
After a 199 mile drive and a stop for petrol (The car came with a full tank "" never had that before) we arrived at the Nurburgring. I had already checked to make sure the Ring was open to public. We purchased a 6 lap ticket for 76 Euros and 2 Hours 40 minutes after leaving the factory we started the first lap! The Ring on public days is a toll road and I had already checked at the factory that the Porsche insurance covered the Ring.
Using a maximum of 5000 revs and being very gentle on the Brakes we drove the 6 laps. Between each I let the car cool down for about 10 minutes. The first lap Bridge to gantry was 9 minutes 55 sec and the last 9 minutes 10 sec. With the car run in and the driver more used to the car I would expect a much faster lap.
The evening was spent in the cockpit bar of the Dorient Hotel with our rooms overlooking the GP grid. We left for Calais at 7:45 and arrived at Euro Tunnel at 11:55. Porsche had given us a Club Class ticket which I had not used before. Next time I will check to see the premium they charge as it was quite good.
On Friday I drove the car to Donington Park to attend a BRSCC track day with my Caterham R500. However I did manage to take the car around the circuit for a number of laps. The car handled very well and the 450 BHP was put to full use!
This afternoon we drove back from the circuit after suffering a broken fuel pump on the R500 8 laps from the end and 24 seconds in the lead. The car is such a driver's car that a few extra miles of twisty roads were obligatory!
Having previously owned a Ferrari 360 I can honestly say that this is a much better driver's car. It is also nice not to have everybody looking as you drive past.
