My 964RS shouts too loud!! Advice please...

I noise tested the RS at Castle Combe on Saturday and it was measured at 108dBA from the left hand exhaust (100dBA limit at Castle Combe, 105dBA on noisy days). The marshals said it wouldn't even get on track at a serious race meeting. [:D]

It sounds absolutely wonderful on the road - burbling at idle... snap, crackle and pop on the over-run - Des told me it breathes fire aswell - but if I'm going to enjoy it on track I'll need a plan.

The current set-up is: Cat by-pass, entering from the left into a straight-through rear 'silencer' by Cargraphic, which has two exits: left exit direct to oval exhaust tip, right exit through G-pipe to right exhaust tip. = 108dBA at 4,500rpm

I have the original laterally-mounted rear silencer box and also the secondary silencer available. I also have the undertray which could be refitted for trackdays if it brings the noise down a little further - I think every little helps in this case.

I don't really want to loose all the noise (and power) provided by this set-up - but could do with losing about 5dBA if possible so I can get the car on track for noisy days at some tracks - 105dBA (and normal trackdays at noisier circuits).

A few options on the table...

Option 1: Temporary solution for trackdays only.
I was thinking of refitting the secondary silencer to the right hand side for trackdays to bring the noise down a little (but how much?). But this would still leave the left side as it is now though...

One option for the left side might be to remove the tailpipe for trackdays only, and fit a fabricated blanking plate to the left hand exit from the cargraphic silencer. Essentially, this means all the exhaust gasses would exit through the secondary silencer and might fall within the noise restrictions. I've seen a twin-outlet silencer from Fabspeed which gives the option of fitting left AND right tailpipes, OR right tailpipe ONLY and a blanking plate to the left exit. I'm not sure whether this is possible with the Cargraphic box though?

Option 2: Temporary solution for trackdays only.
Additional muffler cans on the exhaust tips, but (a) not sure how much they'll lose in noise, (b) unsure about damage caused by backpressure.

Option 3: Permanent solution.
Go back to original set-up with original silencer and secondary silencer, single exhaust tip - but could I keep the cat by-pass (I don't have the original cat). But I like the sound of the current set-up too much!![:(]

Option 4:
Be limited to Brands Hatch GP, Spa, some french circuits and the Ring. Not really ideal as I've bought the car to enjoy at as many circuits in UK or overseas as possible.

Sorry for the long post - but I'm looking for any opinion/advice which might help get the car on a track.

Many thanks for any thoughts,
Rich

P.S. I'm off to the Maldives in the morning for 8 days - so I'll have to be a cheeky g!t and leave this with you guys and I'll catch up with the thread when I get back!!! :ROFLMAO:

I had a similar problem on mine - set up was mainly straight through pipes, cat bypass and cup pipe.

Read 108 - 109db static at Oulton in March and got on by the skin of my teeth.

Changed the cup pipe back to standard silencer and I'm back down to 104db - which is exactly what it showed at Oulton last week.

Guess I'd be fine for drive by's at other tracks and have never had a problem anywhere else tbh.

I guess your G Pipe will certainly be adding a few db also....

Get it sorted though - no point having an RS if you don't take it to where it belongs..[;)]

I'd ditch the G pipe first - even with an effective intermediate box these seem to be noisy.
These things do vary, on the same day last week when Jason was tested at 104db - mine made exactly the same figure - but with at cat bypass and cup pipe.
Need to be careful about adding extra silencers, proper cans ok, but the Supertrapp systems can cause probs.
Whatever solution you come up with you should be able to keep the cat bypass and make a reasonable figure.

I don't know where Des is, but can confirm the car has run at Brands several times with the current exhaust set up........not even a flag waved or talking to as far as I recall.

Indicative of how "hard" Des wash pushing? [;)]

I was also at Oulton last week and got the car db tested. Knew it was loud but didnt expect the 115db reading that I got!!! [:D] Clearly I wasnt allowed on as you can imagine.

Got some SERIOUS thinking to do to be able to get on the track with that!
