Hi Folks,
I am starting to think I now have the wrong Forum name as it aligns better with the 964 I just sold than it does with the 997.2 I just bought. Ho-hum. I can live with it.
I have been a Porsche fan for 40+ years since first playing Top Trumps in the early 70s. I bought my first Porsche in 2002 – a Boxster 2.7 in Meridian Silver. That was replaced with a Basalt Black Boxster S in 2003 and a 996 C4S Cab in Midnight Blue in 2004. Then in 2005 we moved to the states and I selected a new 997 C2S Cab in Arctic Silver as my daily drive. My biggest and best upgrade came in 2007 when #1 daughter was born and the 997 gave way for a proper boot and full size back seats. Of course her education began early and by 20 months’ of age she could spot and name a ‘Porsch-a’ on the street and when pressed she’d grin ‘nine-eleven’ or ‘Box-ta’.
Fast forward to 2013 and we were back in the UK. With my 6-year old protégé on side it was time for another Porsche. We bought a gorgeous Guards Red 964 Coupe as a weekend plaything and we immediately joined PCGB as joint members. Over the next 2 years we enjoyed many events together including winning the R24 Concourse for the 1990-1999 group at Kimbolton in 2014 and participating in the Carrera parade at Hedingham’s Classics at the Castle in 2015.
Still with a love of the 997 and a particular hankering for a Turbo I started to ‘casually’ review adverts. Big mistake?! One can never really turn back after one starts to ‘casually’ review adverts. The more you look… the more you want. Darn. I was bitten. Then one day on this PCGB forum I responded to a thread about 964s for sale and suggested I might consider selling mine. I posted pics and a description online and I was mobbed. I could have sold the car to 5 different people but it went to a lovely chap, a true enthusiast just an hour or so down the road.
I turned my attention back to the classifieds and found a moody Meteor Grey 997.2 Turbo Coupe for sale. Full Porsche service history, low miles, lovely condition; a real stunner owned by a guy who also has a 996 C4S Cab, a 991 GT3, and a 997.2 GT3 RS. After a few days’ of online and telephone research I had corresponded with almost all of the previous owners, all of whom said it was the best car they’d ever had. One even forwarded old invoices and documents to me so that I could fill out the history file. A true gent! A proper enthusiast! A PCGB member too
Of course I can’t buy a new car without that first ‘getting to know you wash and wax’ to stroke my OCD tendencies; and so it began. Many evenings in the garage post wash: wiping, claying, cleansing, wiping again, sealing, and waxing. The interior was deep cleaned including all carpets, all leather, windows, etc. every surface was cleaned. It now looks and smells like a new 997 should, but its knocking on for 6 years old.
I include a few pics below taken while on a ‘get to know you’ drive (stopping in at Goodwood) and one taken as the delivery driver unloaded "Penny" - a name given by the true gent.
I look forward to joining some events along with my co-pilot. Here's a pic or two for old times' sake!
