My car sounds like Chewbacca !

When starting from cold there is about 4-5 seconds of a groaning / moaning type noise coming from the engine bay. The only thing I can compare it to is Chewy from Star Wars !
Now the weather has turned really cold it lasts a lot longer & sometimes happens when car is stopped in traffic, revving usually stops it.
Any ideas ? Polyrib belt need tightening perhaps ?

Cheers

Julian.

Without hearing it, it is hard to say what it might be.

The only thing I can think of which sounds similar is hydraulic tappets, but I've never hear anything from mine and I am not sure you should hear them when you stop.
Aside from that, then there is the belts to consider, but they usually squeal.

The only other cause I can think of for groaning, would be if there was air in the coolant system. I know it is supposed to be sealed for life, but have you checked the level?

Julian,
I have just had a similar noise in my C2, sounded really terrible but then went away as the engine warmed up. It also was becoming worse over a period of weeks to the point where I took the car to Reading where they discovered there was a low oil level in the power steering resevoir. There was no sign of external leaks from the steering rack or pipes. Noise now gone away but as the car was given a 48K service by the OPC about a month ago; I was not too impressed. Check your oil, it should be visible on the dipstick even with a cold engine. Good luck !

Had the same problem with my 964, topped up the power steering fluid.... and no more horrible groans !

Had this problem with a few cars over the years. Solved it by asking my better half to take the bus.[;)]

If you mean a low moan sound (I described it as like a far away ship's foghorn...) then I asked the OPC why my car did this.
Answer was that it was nothing to worry about, but I can't remember WHAT it was![&o]

Thanks guys - will check the power steering level. Car had a major service 2 months ago so will be annoyed if it is the level & it wasn't spotted.
In a way its nice to be greeted by Chewy in the morning !

Checked the power steering fluid level & its fine, exactly where it should be.
OPC Guildford are at a loss - "perhaps air pump" then the usual "bring it in & leave it with us" so might have to do that.

Just a thought, if you turn your steering to full lock and hold it there that will put added pressure on the pump which may recreate the sound? if it does you have your answer? I know you've probably already thought of this but, just thought I'd mention it just in case.

Hadn't thought of that, will try. I am going to record the sound so that Porsche Guildford can hear it - the head mechanic there suggested that !
