My Credit Crunch Track Car

I'm about ready to hit the circuit again - in this

P1010179Large.jpg

It's a racing car that ran in the road saloons series (and won in '95 and '02). It was originally imported from Japan by Honda to run in the Willhire 24hrs (you can see the panels riveted over the holes where the fuel fillers for the long range tanks were).

Originally a 1.6 VTEC, now stroked to 1.8 by Mardi Gras and running 175-180 hp. You can see from the pics it stil has a bit of weight to lose. Race regs meant it ran with a full interior, and was driven to & from every meeting. The car has a new MOT and is insured for road use. It came with loads of spares including 5 sets of wheels & tyres inc slicks & wets, 5 or 6 sets of mintex pads, & loads of other stuff.

You can also see in the pics it has plenty of battle scars - but with a new wing at £50 and a sill at £20 it won't take much to smarten her up if I want to.

I'm planning my first track day at Cadwell on the 23rd Jan & hope to get a few more in before a 'ring trip which will probably be in May

Oh yes - the price for all this? - Including all the spares, it was around the same as fitting KW's to a 944 (inc re-indexing naturally..[;)] )

Some more pics

....Looking forward to hunting down a few 944's this summer [;)] [:D][:D]

I like your style edh, proper drive it like you stole it shedtastic racer. I sometimes wish I had just gone and spent a couple or 3 grand last summer on a track slag mk1 mx5 [8D]

It should be quite quick - and cheap to run (I hope) as I have a garage ful of spares

The plan is to run this for 6-12 months & replenish my car funds, then probably pick up a track specced E36 M3

- stay tuned for news of my old car as well - I don't want to pre-empy Dave's thread too much, but it's currently getting a major makeover. It's about to become a much more focused track car. I've seen the pics, and there's currently not much left attached to the shell! I've been making some helpful suggestions about all the things he might like to spend his money on while the car is in bits & the engine is out.[:D][:D]

I hate to mention it Ed, but I think there's a small crease on the rear wing :ROFLMAO:

I think this is such an awesome idea. Have you driven it on the road much yet?
I assume you have to open the rear hatch to refuel?

Damn - I didn't spot that! [;)]

The long range tanks have been removed & there's a standard tank / filler arrangement, so no problems there.

I've only driven it back to my house so far - about 50 miles. I'm waiting to get the cambelt done (last changed in 2002). It's only done a few miles since then, but better safe than sorry. The car has only done 54000km's from new, but I guess plenty of those were on track at 8k rpm!

The car drives pretty well on the road, much nicer than either of my previous cheap ex. race cars. I don't think it's much harsher than a standard DC2 Integra Type R. I may keep the carpet, glass & rear seat base in for now, maybe until after the 'ring trip.

I've already found the Civic 4G (4th generation) forum - I think I may have doubled the average age there [:D]. Looks like there are some fairly cheap tuning options for extracting a bit more power - maybe up to 200bhp @ fly.

Its hit the scenery a few times... [:D] Did the advert state: 'only driven on Sundays' by any chance? [;)]

Keep us updated with your progress Ed, any plans to get a license and enter something competitive? [;)]

I guess you don't win races by being shy & retiring [:D]

- and I think I could replace all the panels for the cost of a 944 front wing...

No plans for competing yet Paul - this car is supposed to save me money!. Even getting an entry would cost me ARDS, new helmet & harness. I do have a couple of mates who sprint quite regularly though.. There is some consideration to be given to any mods that would make the car ineligible for certain series. I believe there's a fair bit more power to be had by decent manifolds & a re-map. Of course then I'd be more in need of an LSD to help get the power down...(and there goes the budget track car straight out of the window...)

I think it's likely to just get a bit lighter, and spend the money on UK tracktime + a 'ring visit.

Top man. Great car.

Thats exactly my view of life (and cars at the moment), cheap, spares aplenty, not too many worries if it gets a ding and easy to work on.

That`ll rev like nothing on earth, great fun.

Look forward to seeing you on a track one day.

That would go very well in the CSCC Tin Tops race series - you should consider it! 40 minute races for 1 or 2 drivers with a compulsory pit stop. You could rent out a shared drive & race for free!!! Honestly.

Hi Andy - it's an interesting idea.

maybe next year? I'm going to just run the car on trackdays this year

I'm also in touch with a guy who's running one in the NSSCC - he's had a class win in his first season, so his car is certainly competitive.

I've just remembered I have a rollcage camera mount, so should be able to do some vids assuming
a. The snow melts sometime this year
b. I remember to take the camera

Cambelt booked for Jan 20th - I'm also going to put some FIA spec padding on the cage

Just booked my first trackday of the year - looks like a bargain as well

Oulton Park - Feb 24th - open pitlane for £99 [:D]
