....which means I've got to buy a new one?

....open face, full face, manufacturer, spec/approvals etc......any advice gratefully recieved

I favour open face in a saloon car -Arai do a nice open face, £300 from GP Racewear in Chiswick, although Demon Tweeks may be nearer 2 u.

Hi Jim

I would always go for full face and I like the fit anf finish of Arai. Quite a few places are selling the Arai Astro J cheap as the model has been replaced with the Astro R. Take a look in MCN.

I think the Snell approved car helmets are only a requirement if racing, most track day organisers are happy with ACU gold (actually, most don't even check) but its your head so get a good one.

another classic comedy moment passes the PCGB [:-]

but a Full face is my recommendation....... esp if you car has no airbags !

Totally agree with Mel ,not something to try and cut corners with, assuming ur brains are in better nic than ur nipples ................The Arai is very light and comfortable to wear ,surprising how hot one gets on track days ..............if wearing a 6 point harness open face adequate, if ur teeth are as rotten as mine !
GP Racewear have an 'artist' service if u want to get really silly ...................mine looks like a walnut whip ,now does that surprise any one ?

There are a couple more threads in the FAQ in the general forum (if specs accepted does become a factor they are detailed/linked).

I tend to agree with the old Bell advertising slogan "if you have a $50 head, buy a $50 helmet".

Open face.....about £60 squids for a suitable Sparco......via Demon Tweeks credit card to hand.....[&:]

thanks chaps.....my inclination is toward open face with the most approvals/standards I can as I'm still toying with the idea of doing the Speed Challenge next year

....also whilst looking at the threads suggested in General, thanks Mark, I'm also now wondering about "ancillaries" i.e gloves, undies, balaclava.

I wasn't going to get gloves, yes to pixie boots, and hadn't even thought about balaclave, undies or a race suit....though I did think the very holey full Dainese race leathers hanging in the garage (for sale, swap or gift to the right worthy applicant BTW) would raise a laugh and make the RHD RS experience even more anatomically challenging.

So straw poll answers please......

a) More protection than a NASA Astronaut, hat, bala, gloves, boots, undies, suit....and remortgage....."FOR A TRACK DAY?"....Mel I seem to remember you subscribe to this approach[8D]
b) helmet, bala & gloves
c) just helmet

I mean I was just going to like turn up, strap on a caulender, wizz round, and, hopefully, go home[X(]....now I'm looking at a Motorhome and ringing round for sponsors[:D]

I found gloves very helpful in the RS as the steering needs a little more effort than my old Boxster. Not hugely expensive either from places like GP Racewear.

If you are going for an open face helmet, does that mean your biking days are over?

Gloves crucial!! I used to wear up blisters and corns on the palms of my hands.....and just from driving you one-track minded lot........[:D]

Unfortunately yes Feroz...hence the leathers are also up for grabs.....bikes, even on track with much less risk than the road, are not alas compatible with young Children in my other halfs eyes......she does have a point.....I think I remember Lee saying something along the lines of "not being able to take it easy once you get out there".....well thats me I'm afraid....hence the Dainese look like a tea bag and I could teach adidas a thing or two about footwear ventilation....sad because there are few better rushes than going quick on a bike on a track especially places like Cadwell and Oulton with a bit of relief. Do you do bike track days? Have you ever been to the Isle of Mann? Outstanding!

so either way gloves it is!

A balaclava won't hurt either - and it helps keep the helmet clean (if anyone tells you you're taking it too seriously).
