My first love is still going strong

While researching used prices for my 987 in anticipation of its imminent (?) replacement, I found a fulsome ad for my first Boxster, a 986 MY2000. Forum rules preclude my telling you where, but it is described by the seller, a leading Porsche independent in the Midlands, as a 'gorgeous Porsche Boxster 2.7 finished in Arctic Silver with Metropole Blue leather interior and blue power hood'.

But my biggest surprise was the price: £7,986 for a car almost exactly (give or take a couple of weeks) twelve years old. I paid £37,821 on the road, so even if it fetches the asking price the depreciation is still over £200 per month! This is something I'd rather not think about as I gather my resources to pay for my new 981.

Does anyone else have figures for long term depreciation?

As for my first love, I do hope it goes to a good home.

Maybe you should look at other premium brands such as Mercedes and Audi , BMW and see how much they depreciate then you might not think so badly of our brand :)

Over 12 years its £2500 a year. Thats a low average over that period. Expect most of it in years 1-5 though! I reckon on £5-6K a year for a Boxster/Cayman. If depreciation bothers you go for a 5 year old minter! _Like I didn't of course!

Should have kept it Brian - you don't have to worry about depreciation then!

My 407 Diesel depreciates at an equally scary, if not faster rate, but then I do a lot of miles in it. On the other hand my 2005 987 S was exactly 4 years old when I bought it, I think it had lost about £30k up to that point. Since then I believe it has depreciated very little at all. Is there a lesson here?

definately-buy new and never sell[:D]

I agree with Dyllan.

However, having lost circa £25K in under a year (twice) on new 911s I won't be doing that again ie buy new, sell quick.

Far better to purchase slightly old (1 year) and keep. But make sure the spec is really what you want.

Much better still, choose the marque wisely.................... [:D]

But if you insist on a Porsche, buy a 993 [:D]

And there's me remembering you saying to me in the IOM-"I can't afford to buy secondhand cars!"[:)] Oh how times have changed Derek.

Well I'm obviously two-faced! My last 3 Ferraris are pre-owned and you will soon see me in a rather beautiful 993 C2S. I don't think we will consider the Macan a true Porsche... hush my mouth [:D]

Good choice,Derek--when this legal case & costs issue I've been battling are properly settled (we won-he won't pay etc)-my wife & I will be looking for a nice 993 C2 to replace the 964C2 we had to sell to help pay my barrister.[&o]

Ah well, good luck with the lawyers. Having been divorced twice I know just how much they like to make money. The only thing I would say about delaying the purchase is that certain cars are now being seen as investments. F360s, F430s and 993s are among them.

Certainly better than putting the loot under your matress.... assuming you have some to put [:D]
