My first Porsche - a few niggles... HELP..

I have just acquired my first in what i hope is a long list of Porsches...

I have a 1998 2.5 Boxster which has done 100,000 miles

I have noticed the following problems and would appreciated any help anyone can offer...

1) The car seems to pull back under acceleration... pulls back between 2k-3.5k revs, but flys after 3.5k... this happens more when the car is cold but still happens every now and again when car is fully warmed up...

2) The car can smell of petrol every so often... no leaks or patches noticable either in the car or on the floor after car has been parked or idled for some time...

Any help/suggestions would be hugely appreciated...

Many Thanks

Would agree with Glyn - the wire in the MAF sensor is very delicate, but can be cleaned with some electrical contact cleaner - if you feel confident that is !

ok great thanks i will give cleaning it a go..... if this fails how expensive are these sensors and where is best place to get porsche parts?

I think you guys are probably right because i am getting a combined mpg of 21... which seems a bit harsh...

i will let you know how i get on...

thanks again

£175 from Europarts, however you can unplug the Maf then run it, the system goes into its limited operation strategy, if your MAF is defective then the approximates within the LOS will be much closer to what is required and you will find your problems almost gone - however unplugged will not pass an MOT (levels will be too high)

Ok, thanks guys... yesterday it all arrived contact cleaner, torx bit... and i cleaned the maf, car now runs alot better, and saved 160 on a new one... however, i still dont think its 100% pulling... are there any other pointers that could lead to lower performance, any items that tend to come loose? i read something about manifold bolts or something... is this as easy to check as the maf cleaning?

Also, the maf was fairly dirty, not excessively... going to change the air filter tho... i noticed i have a k&n air filter is this standard or has previous owner upgraded it.. could this be reason? should i put a standard one back on?

Thanks again for all your help..

Marc

K & N is definitely NOT standard. As it is oiled, some people have complained of a downsteam impact on MAF performance etc. although K & N dispute this.

I would recommend you go back to stock filter and see if it makes any difference.
