I spent some of yesterday afternoon upside down in the drivers footwell replacing the brake light switch and nowI have brake lights again. Apart from finding myself wedged in an unable to get out at one point it all went well. Feeling pleased with myself as this is the first successfull bit of "spannering" I have done since I was 18 some years ago.

This is one of the reasons we got this car and I hope to get more adventurous with time. Doing the brake fluid next!

Well done - generally nice to work on so get stuck in! (whoever specified the fixings for the rear number plate lights should be made to go and sit in the corner - they may have also worked on the turbo exhaust plumbing)

Take care. It's a slippery slope ... you'll be debating the best ways of doing a clutch (gearbox out or leave it in) and contesting the merits of Snap-On vs. Halfords Pro soon ...

(It's a good place to be - don't get me wrong. But oil permanently lodged under fingernails is not a good look this season ... )

I was given a Halfords Pro 1/4inch drive socket set by a good friend as a Christmas present last year. Small thing, but just as you said - very very useful for about 80% of jobs. Much easier than lugging out the 3/8inch set for most things ... and much nicer to use when working on anything smaller than about a 10mm headed bolt.

I've bought the 1/4 3/8 and 1/2 drive set because i work on the car on the drive and having to go in and out to get the different sets, plus the screwdrivers and big toolbox of allsorts was driving me mad!
Also my 3/8 set I got 1979, the 1/2 given secondhand about 1990 and various bits have worn out / broken over the years so it was time.

One thing I will say in favour of my 3/8 Teng set is that they are EXCELLENT at honouring their 'Lifetime Power Warranty'. I haven't broken many bits of theirs since I was given the kit (aged 18 ... many years ago!) but they have always, without fail, been replaced over the counter without quibble. When I broke something that was now obsolete (triple-square tool) they offered me the new equivalent, or to see if they had any left-overs of the old part. I opted for the latter ... and they found some replacements for me.
