My first thoughts....

Having had my new car (911 S) for just over 2 weeks I thought I'd share my initial thoughts.

Firstly, the whole buying process through Porsche Swindon was relatively painless. I was impressed by the female sales executive Ceri who kept me informed throughout and who was particularly helpful when it came to specing the car. I had a budget and there was no pressure from her to exceed it. They were also helpful in transferring my personalised number plate from my M3 to the Porsche.

I was in Vancouver when the car arrived in the UK so I had to wait nearly a week before I could collect her - but Ceri kindly sent photos. These are the little details from dealers that are appreciated.

When I collected the car all the paperwork was handled smoothly and I inspected the car. There were a couple of minor niggles - the passenger kick plate had a scratch/gouge on the plastic and the plastic battery cover was quite badly warped. Both these were sorted out within half hour (although I've since realised that the battery covers just don't really sit particularly flush as they're very malleable plastic) and I was able to drive home.

So what do I think after 2 weeks -

Things I love -

The look of her - I smile every time I get into her. The shape is iconic and very different from other cars on the road. Going for speed yellow was a bold choice and I haven't seen many others, so she stands out (that might be good or bad).

The noise - PSE was definitely a wise addition.

The drive & handling - very different from my M3 and I'm just about getting used to how different it feels. I'm having to watch my speed as well - very tempting to keep pressing down on the accelerator!

Things I'm not so keen on -

Opening and closing the bonnet. Sticking my hand underneath to open the catch means I end up with a wet & slightly dirty hand if the weather isn't great.

Reverse gear feels VERY stiff to engage but I'm hoping this will improve with use.

I miss the fact that when I'm reversing the passenger side mirror doesn't 'dip'. I found that really useful on the M3 and whilst an option with the adaptive sports seats I wasn't willing to pay £1600 for the privilege.

I would have preferred to have the key fob open the doors individually (just the driver's door initially for personal safety when I'm on my own). I'm told by the dealer that this isn't possible - shame.

Overall I love the car. The pros far outweigh any little cons. It's a thrilling ride every time and I foresee many happy years ahead for the two of us.

Hi Kaz,

Great to hear you like your 997 more than your M3, I am of the same thinking.

If you have the normal memory seats, then your OPC can programme your N/s mirror to dip when you go into reverse (you need to keep the little mirror adjust knob turned to N/s adjust position, just like BMW). You can also get comfort open and close of the windows programmed into your key fob.

Passenger mirror does go down if you leave the mirror switch to the left when you engage reverse.

Welcome to our world - there's no going back now as I've found out myself!

If you leave your wing mirror adjuster switch as if you're adjusting the passenger side, that wing mirror dips when you put it in reverse.

Speed yellow looks oh so good [:)]

Really glad your happy with the car and had a good purchasing experience.
Its really nice to hear the OPC do get it right sometimes..

As other have said, see the OPC for the mirror- I think its in the manual on how to set it yourself.. not that I or any other man has ever read it [;)]

Hi Kaz

Well done on purchasing an AWESOME car! and in a gorgeous colour too! I once had an M3 Cab in yellow and it was a pain to keep clean however isnt that what valet yards are for?! It will certainly turn heads...you will get lots of attention in her!

Anyway, If i see you out and about on the roads then I will definately be giving you a 'Big Smile', 'Wavy Hand' and 'Flashy L:ights' and I may even follow for a short while in appreciation?! [:D]

Take care X

Great looking car! Congratulations.

I changed to a Porsche from an M3 a few years back and have never looked back from a driving point of view.

Share your frustration on the somewhat niggling configuration front. You can configure the drivers door only to open from the key but to open the passenger door you need to be in the car to operate the lock - I now use this less as I often have a passenger who doesn't always want to wait for me to get in the car to open their door. Other criticisms: you can not operate the sunroof remotely via the key or keyfob ; the timed auto-locking device can not be configured due to a software bug at present.

Nice car Kaz, it does stand out. I was also away with work when my car arrived at the OPC. My salesman did say he would send some photos, still waiting for them. I wasn't too disappointed tho' just made seeing it for the 1st time all the better. Now I need to get home again and get some miles on it before the winter sets in.[:(]

Hi Kaz

Great looking car! Like you, I wanted my first 911 to be in a bright colour ...

Agree totally with the Swindon OPC comments. I also bought my car from Ceri, she is spot on for customer service...

Have fun!

Thought I recognised the showroom.. I also bought my car from Swindon but dealt with Tim.. Everyone in the dealership I spoke to have been professional and like you the purchase was painless. Nice looking car. As everybody else has mentioned the mirrors can be configured to dip..

Enjoy Her

Sadly, the mirror will only dip if I have electronically adjustable seats (which I don't). I went for the sports seats.
