My Flash has gone

Hi,

Hoping to find a electrical knowledge base out there. I am quite good with the mechanical side but, a novice on electrics.

The car '91 944 S2

The problem. At sometime the flash function on the headlamps has stopped working. When the lights are popped up the dipped/main beam works correctly but, if I was in dipped mode and pulled the stalk towards me it used to flash the mains now it doesn't. Similarly when the pods are retracted and you pull the stalk towards you the auxillary driving lamps flashed now they don't.

Any pointers any one. I am a bit perplexed as you can switch between dipped and main isn't it same mechanism?

Thanks in advance

Regards,

Ian

... isn't it same mechanism?

Not quite - the switching is different. I'd guess you have a mechanical failure in the steering column switch thingummie. Your solutions are a new one (second-hand, probably), or to try and dismantle the existing one to see if it can be fixed. However I think they are riveted together so it may put up a decent fight.

Oli.

Not knowing that Ollie I drilled out my rivets and replaced them with nuts and countersunk socket set screws. I had different issue and before pulling it apart it would be a good idea to check out the output from the pins. there are wiring diags about so the op can research which pins to check. If you do take it apart there is a little plastic helmet that covers a part of the mechanism so that it doesn't short out. Don't lose it or let you wife put it somewhere safe...grrrr! A couple of matchsticks or similar will be handy to keep the terminals in place whilst you reassemble. You will see what I mean when you get it apart. Mark the position of the switch on the column. It is a one piece unit with both the wiper and lighting controls in one.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the reply's I took the stalk module off last night and as noted it is pretty well sealed and riveted.

As I stated I am a complete novice with electrics could someone point me in the right direction for a diagram which show the rear of the stalk and what each of the pins does. then I guess I can test that each functions correctly.

Regards,

Ian

A little late, but this will in all likelihood be the switchgear. Its far more usual to flash whenever you use the indicators though...

So, took the steering wheel off and then the stalk unit. Turned it over to see the electric connections and one of the pins on the dip/main side had melted plastic all around it. So I took it apart by drilling the rivets out and inside it was a melted plastic mess. So guess that's the problem.

Have purchase a working secondhand one.

Thanks for the pointers chaps.

Ian
