My initial thoughts on the 991

Well took the GT3RS Gen 2 in today for the first service and was offered a 991 to use for a couple of days.
Wanted to give a good fair opinion especially as I have owned 8 Porsche's now and two 997's a turbo and my current GT3RS which I will make sure I avoid comparing with the 991).
I will make it short and really hope I have been fair and honest and it's of interest to others.
The first initial impression is from the inside there is a raise in quality of fittings. The dash is clear and the dials lovely, some nice toys like a G force indicator, not sure the mini map is much use (well to my eyes at least). Sadly there were several rattles from trim in the rear over bumps and I did find some really quite sharp edges to trim at bottom of seat, but otherwise lovely.
The seating is typical Porsche and very comfortable (standard seats), it's PDK and as some of you know I am no lover of it, but you will see. First thing on start-up is the exhaust sounds throaty nice sound if not IMO a tad "fake". The PDK seems another light year away from my last Porsche PDK Car being around town it felt similar to my BMW 730 in Drive mode, "smooth and no jerks" (which even more so makes me feel my Boxster had an issue).
Comfort was amazing the road noise must be I would guess 50% less than the 997 and very smooth, in fact I liked the ride more than my BMW, a massive improvement, slightly more roll, steering I really did not feel it was worthy of a note in difference to the 997 except just maybe slightly less feel, but certainly nothing to moan about.
I quickly turned off the stop/start; it was jerky and a nuisance especially on quick getaways. Did not use the electronic hand brake I just used park. (a pity it was set so low down you can't see it and if I did use it, it would have to be blind.
Performance I tried all modes and found it as expected good and as expected from Porsche, I can't compare against the GT3RS or the Turbo as both felt quicker but against my old 996 MK2 it was fast. I don't know if it was me but there seems slight hesitation in the change from about 50- 70 +, (I think it must be me).
Therefore Likes out of 10: compared to my experience of the 997
Ride
991 (10)
997 (7)

Comfort
991 (9) (slightly as usually your hands seem to point to the middle)
997 (same 9)

Steering
991 (8.5)
997 (9.5)

Sound (against a 997 with Sports Exhaust)
991 (8) (I really did feel it was not Real seems almost synthetic, that's not to say it was not nice)
997 (7)

Performance (I can't judge as it was certainly not as fast as either of my 997's and to be fair I can't compare)

Summary
I really could use this car every day and on the odd track day (which I only do once a year), it was amazingly comfortable on the road, very smooth and road compliant. I do slightly feel it's too smooth and refined for a sports car and I would get the same feeling if I drove a M series BMW/Alpina or an Aston or AMG Merc SL. It's just lost a bit of its soul, maybe that's the times we live in??
Bottom line it could replace my BMW as an everyday car as I don't need big rear seats, but it certainly would not replace the fun factor of my GT3RS or a Turbo, and considering this car is well into £90K + it would even likely mean if I did PX I would have to pay money to change my GT3RS , I really feel its price heavy now.
That's my two penny worth, lovely car, one in which most owners will enjoy, but they would also enjoy an Aston V8 or a Merc AMG SL

Glad you enjoyed your drive Martin, and agree with you that compared with the gen1 C2S there is a step change in ride, comfort and noise ( of a different kind[8D]). The pdk and the handling on turn in are both significant improvements too.

Btw the mini map can be switched to a 3D arrow version which I find more useful, mainly because my eyes don't change focus fast enough for the map detail any more []

So. let's hope you enjoy the turbo and GT versions of the 991 when they finally come along.

White stick for your birthday then. [:(] Can I have the car when you're too old to drive it? [:D]

Regards,

Clive.
