Collected a 1984 944 Square Dash in Silver today. It has a history file like I have never seen before. Previous owner spent thousands at an Indy in Ruislip -
new cambelt and balance shaft belts
new tensioners
new balance shaft seals
new camshaft seals
new alternator
new waterpump
new rad and hoses
new discs and pads all round
new brake lines and flexi hoses
new suspension/steering bushes at front
new rear wheel bearings
sills repaired

Needs a bit of repair on a front wing and around the hatch catches where rust is showing but drives A1.
Strange thing though I drove 180 miles in traffic and motorway and it was fine. Got home and turned off the engine and temp gauge goes up to red and water comes out of the filler cap.
Topped up and ran the motor a while, rubber hoses don't pressure up and no water comes out , turn off and water comes out of the overflow!
I have noticed the electric fan does not kick in but would that matter?

Did you bleed the block (12mm screw on the top of the tophose mount) when topping up?

Sounds like the water is boiling around the head and pressurising the system, whilst it is running the coolant flow is working to keep it cool.

Suggest new coolant cap and thorough bleed (takes at least 3 attempts!)

No but i will try that.

Its just come back from having a had a new rad and water pump but maybe the chappies didnt bleed it properly or long enough.

Will do the usual, chock front up a bit bleed till no bubbles

Strange ( or maybe not!)

Took the car out tonight and blasted round Cambridgeshire for 80 miles.

Came back and left the engine ticking over, it didnt overheat or lose any water.
