Not got round to uploading any photos yet but will do soon!

Anyway, I have now joined the ranks fo the 996's after moving over from the 964 [:(] after 4 years.

Purchased a 2002 model 51 plate 996 3.6 in Meridien Silver (more a light grey metallic).
Has crested leather seats, automatic dimming mirrors (great!), auto window wipers (not so great), satvav, CD changer, parking sensors, silver centre console, grey stitching (!?), turbo tailpipes, 18" Carrera alloys. Amazing car and great condition.

Will put a running report up soon.

However couple of problems I need help with....

- Satnav/ PCM. Doesnt have a manual. Can one of these be downloaded from anywhere or puchased replacements as I cant work out the satnav very well (complicated piece of kit!)
- Autochanger doesnt play and now wont eject my discs (yes they were put in correctly and the right way round []. is this a common fault/ easy fix (power??) or am I doing something stupid [8|]?
- Locking wheel nut key- doesnt have one so I cant get the wheel off if I need to? Can you get replacements from OPCs? How much - hear they may have sets of master keys?

Thanks

Welcome to Waterworld Craig!

You can download a PCM2 manual here: http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=293052. I've never seen a PCM1 manual online, but you can get a hard copy from an OPC - they are only about £10-15.

I believe the CD changer has a fuse under a small flap, which is prone to blowing. That might be a starting point.

If you go to an OPC they have a set of wheel keys, and will match one up for you.

Welcome Craig

I am always intrested to hear peoples views moving from an aircooled car to one with water, so often hear people knocking the watercooled cars, ok maninly the early ones even Total 911 magazine has the occasional go at them, but they sold a lot of them and its one performance car you can drive all day long through rain or shine, traffic or a great B road and it will put a smile on your face, i know i own one. So it would be nice to hear your thoughts on owning this car compared to the 964 which i am also a fan of.

Also looking forward to seeing the pictures.

Phil

As the driver of a 2002 model 51 plate 996, can I commend you on your excellent taste [:D]

I find the satnav generally works, there haven't been too many new roads since 2001 (although you do get some amusing directions on the M6 toll road!

If the phone isn't working you may need a (credit card sized) vodaphone sim card - I use a pay as you go and then divert my mobile to it when I need to.

Wishing you many miles of trouble free motoring.

Thanks for the help guys so far -hopefully iwon't need to be a pain in the ass! Photo attached.

Got a warning light to sort out- faulty O2 sensor should sort and taking her in tomorrow. Will have a look for the fuse- is it with the other fuses or elsewhere? [:-]

Impressions so far...

It is so quick compared to the 964. Sterring is much lighter, brakes much sharper and corners so flat and stable - reworked suspension and benefit of 4 wheel drive?

Miss the sport seats with the bigger bolsters- feel a little 'vulnerable' going round sharp bends. Sounds strange- a lot quieter on tickover and when driving- more road noise than engine (running on Contis at the moment, brand new at the back so hoping may settle down a little). Engine comes alive at 4000 rpm and sounds like a proper Porsche! Sadly at 4000rpm she exceeding most of the speed limits[:)]. In driving feeling and performance is much more akin to my old Subaru Impreza bizarrely than my 964- power always on tap and feels like it never ends but without the turbo whine. Is quiet whiny though rather than rumble and throaty.

Rear seat and storage behind the seat/ parcel shelf is great but boot is ewven smaller than the 964 (4 WD!) which was smaller itself than a 3.2. Access to rear is limited as the seats stop rather being squashable on the front seats to widen access on the 964. Still, if I wanted that much storage I would have bought an estate (or a Cayenne!).

I get 25 mpg on avg compared to 22, cheaper insurance (?!), £210 tax vs 180. Winner all round [:D]

Besides minor niggles that i hope to sort tomorrow this is awesome and a world of difference. Cantwait until I clay and wax her and see what that produces [8D]

Hello Craig

Sounds intresting to hear your thoughts, i also thought that the sound of the engine exhaust note was not so good on my 996, when i needed to replace the exhuast i went for a PSE and this has made all the diffrence, what a great sound without being to noisey.

Enjoy your new car, by the way it looks very nice.

Phil

I now have a 996 and previously owned a 964. I ahve to say the difference in sound is the only thing I miss. Performance, handling, comfort etc etc the 996 wins every time. I have to say this is the best Porsche I have ever owned. Give me water cooled anytime!
