My new car

So, I have made my decision, paid my deposit and collect the car tomorrow. So which one have I gone for, I hear you ask (or even if you don't, I am going to tell you anyway!!)

I am buying a 53,000 mile Guards Red RHD 964 RS. The car has a fair amount of early history and for the last 2 years has been maintained on a no expense spared basis by Autofarm. It has bills for over £12k in the last 2 years. Initially I was a bit concerned about that but Autofarm told me the full story. They helped the last owner to locate the car and this particular car had been used hard on the track but the body was in very good condition and the engine was sound. It was bought cheap knowing that there were areas that needed attention and these are the main things they did.

New suspension all round including all bushes, springs, shocks and front wishbones, geometry and corner weighting.

New disks, pads, wheel bearings, brake hoses.

Reconditioned LSD.

Hot film conversion, decat and chip to 300bhp.

The car comes with a full bolt in cage, although the front section is out at the moment. There are an almost new set of S02's (1000 miles)

Overall, the car drives better than the other 2 cars I drove. It feels fantastic. There are a few minor cosmetic things to make the car perfect but I shouldn't get too hung up on that. Karen at Autofarm, who sold the car on behalf of its owner was very positive about the car, but then she would be!

What was more encouraging was that I have booked it into Autofarm because although it has only done 1000 miles in the last year, it is due its annual service. When I booked it in the services manager told me, toltally unprompted, that I was very lucky to have bought such a fantastic car. She rated it as one of the best! Made me feel a lot better [:)]

So there you have it. I collect the car tomorrow, take it straight to Autofarm and then go away on holiday for a week. So roll on Monday 25th when I get my hands on the car for real.

Thanks to everybody whop has helped me in the decision making process. This forum and the PCGB members in general are superbly helpful and knowlegable. I hope to meet you all in due course and I will be trying to get to the meet at the Ace on Monday 25th.

Hi Simon

Congratulations on your new wheels, great car which I am sure you will enjoy. I bet you can't wait to get some miles under your belt.

Look forward to meeting you at the Ace on the 25th.

Welcome to the best Register, for the best car, in the Club, Simon.

See you at the Ace.

You're gonna like that one. :O) I didn't fancy a Red one but now I have it I call it the fire engine!

I took my new one out for the first time on A and B road in Perthshire. What I want to know is why everyone, I mean everyone pulled into the side of the road and signalled for me to pass which I did very quickly ;O).

They must hear you coming in a 964RS! It covers the ground too.

Melv do you keep a register of cars or is it not worth the time and effort?

I got Thomas' old one from Hermann's and Schmitz

I am tempted to bin the ICE and put a blanking plate back on. Anyone know if you can still get them at OPC?

Charles

Congratulations Simon. Enjoy. It IS the best choice. And the gang are spot on. This and the GT3 forum are definately the most active and dare I say fun. Keep it straight and good to have another active Red RHD amongst us!...and too share the back pain stories with...oh yes![]

1. Yes, kept updated by Club. I can access it if anybody requires info, but not for general information;

2. AFAIK, yes. It's common to 944's too, so u should be able to pick one up.

Can somebody please translate? [:D] Is this like some kind of code that only members of the inner sanctum? Is there a secret wave that only RS owners know and use to each other. And what have badgers got to do with anything!

Please excuse what might apear to be either basic or stupid questions. After all, I am just an inductee . Will all become clearer after the meeting at The Ace?

Simon if you want to ditch the ICE I guess you will need new door cards or at least the material to recover the ones you have to hide the speaker holes. Either way I can point you in the right direction or supply what you need.

Or are your speakers not in the doors?

Sorry Simon. Despite being student of many languages, I have yet to fully understand most of what Des says when he starts smoking his "special RS ciggies". I suspect if linguaphone did a course on Des-speak, it might be a hot seller. [;)]

Well, I've collected it and due to aterrible traffic, I didn't make Autofarm. That will be a trip for tomorrow!

I have enjoyed some of the finer points of RS ownership that I am sure the more experienced would know how to avoid. I have been using my truck driving technique (side mirrors only) as the rear screen misted up after about 20 minutes and has not cleared. I also enjoyed the pleasures of London in the rush hour. Thankfully I have the Smart for that in the future! Do I really have to fit a Motec ECU to sort out the idle?

On the positive side, the noise is glorious and I have never driven a car that exudes so much excitement. I just want to go for a drive, right now. I doubt I will sleep tonight with the thought of an hours drive to Autofarm tomorrow. Now, how many back roads can I take to avoid the motorway?[:D]

Simon be careful other there..................you have an untamed Mustang of the Porsche Stable she could jolt you at anytime......ENJOY THE GREATEST PORSCHE EVER[:)]

No, they don't have a rear screen demister. Although the screen has the wires through it, there is no power supply. My undertsnading is that the very small and lightweight battery wouldn't power it. I suspect that there is a secret way of stopping it misting up but I have yet to be fully initiated into the deepest, darkest secrets of the dark side [:D]

10 minutes is the maximum I've ever been able to drive in any condition on any road with the windows up, and the radio's been on for a total of about an hour. my windows never steam up and it sounds Fantastic

!!! Jim -go to bed!!

Simon -suggest on a dry day you get all the doors open and carpets out. Ideally, stick it in a dehumidified garage for a few days. Also put some anti-mist on the inside of the windows.

I don't have this problem, no carpets!!![;)]

Good choice of car - I'm sure you'll have great fun in it, but you'll have to buy an extra big helmet for track days now. Mel & Des obviously have some sources.

Well, as I am off on holiday next week the car is now tucked up nice and snug at Autofarm having an alarm fitted and a service. Although the car has only done 1250 miles since last years service, it is now 12 months and I want to keep the history going.

The drive up to Autofarm was interesting. I seem to have got the hang of not allowing the car to steam up (steamy windows - oww ahh misses [;)]) and I found the car great for cruising on the motorway. The roads were damp so I took it easy but found a nice safe place to have a little fun. So there I was, doing 45mph in second at about 4250 rpm and I floored it. Instant wheelspin and the back steps out - not so as to be dangerous or anything but enough to remind me that there is no traction control (Don't worry, Des. I am not being stupid [;)]). No worse than I would expect from a Caterham but the difference is that I was dry and warm [:D]. I am still totally enthralled by the car. Next week's holiday will seem like a long time but I am looking forward to collecting the car and cruising down to The Ace. See you all there
