My new car

Hi everyone,

I changed my Gen 1 997 Turbo Tip after two years,a trip to the ring,a few weeks working around Snowdonia with amazing early morning drives to work having bought the car in 2013 with 22K on the clock and taking that mileage up to 46K before changing on the 4th of January.
This is my 997 Turbo S bought with 700 miles on the odometer from Porsche Bristol.

I'm still running it in Andy but it already seems much quicker due to combination of PDK and turbo's spooling up quicker.

Hi Simon

Great choice but what's the story with a 997.2 with only 700 miles?

Maybe you would like to show the new one off on our South West tour this April?![:)]

Hi Alan,

I don't know the full story of why the car has such a low mileage.

It was supplied by Porsche Reading to its first owner and I luckily have all the receipts for the servicing he did with OPC Reading while in his care.

It was registered in November 2012 and was bought back into the OPC Network in December 2015.

It arrived at my dealers,Porsche Bristol (who I have a great relationship with) and within a few hours I had put a deposit on it.

i was aware that it maybe the only 2012 997 Turbo S with less than 1K miles left with only one keeper so the pondering I have been doing for a year trying to decide between Cabrio and hard top was instantly decided.

I am a strong believer in going with instinct and heart when the right car comes up and I have found in the past that one needs to make a quick decision when something rare like a low mileage example comes along, particularly with the peace of mind purchasing direct from OPC and specifically my dealer gives me.

I had asked Sam Cross at the Bristol dealership to keep his eye out for the right Gen 2 Turbo for me a year earlier and I was prepared to wait another year to get one from Bristol (I live in London but I am so impressed with their customer service I even take my car to them for annual minor services).

Anyway,back to the Turbo S.

In the 3 years that the first owner had the car he only drove it 735 miles but did two minor services and a major service in that time all at the supplying dealer OPC Reading.

As the car was sold back to Porsche directly after its last minor, unscheduled service (same day) I strongly suspect that something in the showroom caught the owners eye when he went to pick the car up from its service.

i am not 100% sure if he was sticking to the stipulated Porsche running in rules but I was pleasantly surprised when I had the over-Rev history printed out by Bristol prior to my purchase and there was not even one single over rev recorded in number 1 rev range.

I think this points towards the first owner following Porsche running in procedure or at the very least was mechanically sympathetic.

i have decided to continue to run the car in under the assumption the period was never completed.

I am not doing short journeys, warming the car up carefully and sticking to less than 4500 rpm while being careful not to labour the engine and changing gear a lot to vary the revs on the motorway even if actual speed is constant.

We are currently on 1350 miles,so another 650 to go before I can open her up.

Regarding your kind invitation to the SW tour,I have quite a hectic work schedule but if I can find the time I will try to make it.

It had already caught my eye actually in this months Porsche Post.

Best Regards

Simon

Hey Simon,

What a find! Well done :) With an Aerokit too? That's a future collectible.

As it is a PDK can it actually have over revs? I thought not, but what do I know? If it can have over revs, under what situations might they occur? And what do the various rev ranges represent? Apologies for slight topic deviation.

Cheers

Joe

Dear Joe,

Yes it is still possible record over revs in range 1 and 2 with a PDK box just by engaging the Rev limiter.

However,on a 997 (unlike a 996) over revs in ranges 1 & 2 are ignored by Porsche and do not affect the warranty.

Most 997's end up with thousands in range 1- they are considered normal.

It is ranges 3 and above that Porsche will not renew warranties without further examination due to the severity of the over Rev.

However common it is to hear a PDK or Tip cannot record a range 3 or above over Rev I believe it is possible and occurs sporadically by hitting the limiter very hard while driving in manual mode down steep hills.

i am happy to be corrected though.

My information comes from a reasonable amount of research before buying my first Porsche when I was looking at 996 Turbo's and then fortuitously managed to end up with a 997 Turbo.

Thank you for your kind words regarding my Turbo S.

It is a wonderful find and rather than continue to nurse the mileage I intend to take it on lots of trips with my son and enjoy it,as I did my previous Gen 1 Turbo.

This is the best source of information I found on the Over-Rev subject while researching my first Porsche-

Got it thx Simon. I was busy googling while you were typing. :) I found this page too. The guys at 911V are a great and well-informed bunch. They brokered the sale of my car to a previous owner.

I just picked up a 997.2 Turbo before Christmas and like you enjoy trips and events with my 8-year old co-pilot in the passenger seat. For us, our cars are makers of memories. Was the same with my dad when i was a boy. Music, cars, trips, etc. all conflate to create emotional memories. I have hit the limiter in manual mode twice while overtaking in 2nd. Was on a flat and was due to my eyes being pushed into the back of my head while watching the road instead of the rev counter [:(]

Cheers

Joe

Thanks Eddie, hopefully I can come to your region for an event when the sun comes out.

Hope you're well.

Simon

Reached this mileage yesterday,so almost ready to answer questions now the careful running in period has been observed.

What a great car, requires patience to find these cars. I found my Turbo s two years ago and again it was low mileage(3000 miles, 2010) and through OPC Glasgow. You have to make quick decisions when these opportunities arise and I managed to do the deal before the car was advertised. Like you I use the car and enjoy.

Agreed. I bought a 335d a few years ago from Dick Lovett in Bristol with 53 miles on the clock at 10 months old. Was registered and parked. I had been refreshing the BMW used website 3-4 times a day for weeks. This was advertised and I paid a deposit within probably 20 minutes of the ad going live. Even then there were others on the phone enquiring. Is the only car I have bought without seeing. It was essentially a new car. I kept it nearly 3 years and it was faultless.

Similarly I bought a 335d from Sytner Sheffield, 13months old with 1080miles unseen. Now had it over 3 years with absolutely no problems.
