My New S2 Cab - and a question for you...

Hi Guys,

just acquired this S2 Cab and am wondering where I might get a hood/boot/tonneau cover for it (so what is it actually called?)

Only one I have found so far is in the US here:

http://www.germanautotops.com/porsche-944-968-cabriolet-boot-cover-90-95-black-sonnendecke

But that looks like £330 inc postage to the UK.

Any better/cheaper options out there?

Anyway, heres the car....

Thanks

I'd hazard a guess that a 968 tonneau is the same, and I occasionally see them on eBay, so I'd suggest an ebay search but EU rather than just UK.

FYI, when I bought my 968 cab I had to get a wind deflector to markedly reduce the noise from the nearside (AKA SWMBO in the passenger seat!), and found that putting the tonneau on with the wind deflector in place was such a PITA - it's been in a cupboard upstairs for many a month now! I know I'm not alone in taking this approach, so you might want to think about whether it's a worthwhile purchase!!

Hi and welcome Ian,

Lovely looking car!

Cant help with the Tonneau cover,I'm afraid, only had coupes!

Somebody will be along in a mo with an answer.

Thanks guys,

I don't appear to have the nearside noise problem (so far) and no wind deflector - does the deflector make a big difference?

Thanks

Ian

Makes a heck of a difference - the wind from behind is almost non existent with the wind deflector, but without it it's very noticable. To us it was a major improvement to the car.

Be careful if you decide to buy one. Quite a few of the aftermarket ones require you to drill a large hole in each rear interior panel in exactly the correct place. In my 968 there are "factory installed" holes with plastic caps, so you just remove the caps and install the rubber grommets supplied with the Porsche wind deflector.

I believe the car has some circular blanking covers either sire of the rear seats - so I guess that's what you are referring to?

May I ask where you got your from and how much?

Thanks

Ian

Those sound like the mounting holes.

I bought mine from Porsche Tonbridge, cost £286.25. I believe a former 968uk member bought one from his local OPC (somewhere Newcastle way IIRC) about a year ago for £220, and was told there was only 1 more available in UK! 2 really good points about the Porsche one (apart from the ease of fitting) :
The lower part is horizontal, about the level of the sides of the car, so you can still put stuff onto the rear seats and into the rear footwells - handy for jackets etc.
The upper part pivots from horizontal (hood up) to vertical (hood down) by hand quite easily - and you quickly learn to put it vertical before lowering the hood!

Thanks for that.

Taking a longish run over to N.Wales this weekend so I may need to look into that if the nearside noise you mentioned develops.

Hi Chrishazle,

just wondered if you have any photos of how yours mounts onto the car.

I acquired a non OEM one that fits on the seatbelt mounts rather than the intended mounts but as I'm so tall I have the seat all the way back and the brackets are not long enough (and it looks a bit unstable). If I cant get on OEM one, I may have to use something like this one but make my own brackets up - hence any clues on how it fits will be a great help.

Many thanks

Ian

944 S2 Cab

Ian, that certainly looks identical to mine. FYI the Porsche part number is P000 043 202 50, in August 2011 cost to me was £280.63 -15% PCGB discount + VAT so £286.25. I'll have a look on 968uk, see if I can find Peasea's post about buying one. PM me your email address, I'll email the 1 page fitting instructions that came with mine (check your PM's!!).

Edit - it was April 2013, Peter bought his wind deflector from Porsche Bolton. Can't find the price, but IIRC he said it was £220 (stuck in my mind, as I'd recommended genuine over aftermarket to him, and he paid less than I did!). I also think he said there was only 1 left in UK after his purchase!

Ask your local OPC!

For anyone interested, I contacted my local OPC about the wind deflector and after checking, they said these were still shown as available from Porsche, but no stock in the UK or Germany so no clue on delivery.

I decided to give it a try so ordered one early September and it arrived last week!

So, the good news is they are available, but the bad news is it cost £343 less a 10% "Classic" discount - so a snip at £308.

Its so much better than that after market one I bought (and subsequently returned) so thanks to Chrishazle for pointing me in the right direction.

Ian

That's good news Ian, now all we need is decent weather so we can take the cabs out roof down - haven't had mine out for a couple of weeks, and suspect chances will be thin on the ground for a few months now.
