My new S2 ....

I thought I wouldn't be doing this for a while, but I am now the proud (?) owner of another 944 S2. No pix yet as it needs a good clean inside and out .... oh, and a new gearbox .... and a few other things!

It's a 91 S2 with 140k, metallic gold with light leather interior (not too sure if it is linen). Body wise it seems OK. It's had a bit of paint on the rear that needs sorting out as it's a slightly different shade.

Once I've given it the once over I'll get some photos up, but in the meantime I need a few pointers on :

Replacing gearbox - I was going to repack the CV joints closest to the transaxle with CV grease and use new (cheesehead) bolts. Is there anything else I should be doing?

The windscreen has been replaced at some point and the rubber seal at the top of the screen on the passenger side is gaping and has allowed some water into the passenger footwell. I was going to seal the screen with something like this - should I really be getting the screen removed and replacing the rubber seal? Can the screens be removed intact?

I'm sure there are lots of other things .... but I'll come to those later.

From Pistonheads and in Sussex? I pointed Andy at it as he wanted one for a couretsy carand I thought it might suit.

I'd be careful with the windscreen. It is a pretty substantial structural element of the car - just look at the big allen bolt clamps at the bottom of the windscreen, so if it isn't fixed in properly then I would get it re-set professionally.

I think the 944 (certainly the later ones with the different windscreen designs) was one of the first cars to exploit the windscreen as a structural element of the car to stiffen up the chassis and provide added crash protection. It's commonplace on all cars these days.

It is the very same one. It needs a bit of TLC - but I'm sure I can do something with it. Sounds very good - it's got a rather mean looking cat bypass fitted (by Parrs) and it looks like a single pipe from the bottom of the downpipes straight to the back box.

I'm picking up a new gearbox from Peterboro on Saturday and should get it fitted over the weekend.

Here's a rather dark picture of my ride home on Monday.
