My new website online

To stave off the boredom I've been working on a website about my car. It's still very much a work in progress but I've uploaded the first version this morning. Any thoughts gratefully appreciated.

944 Lux website

Very good.

Can you remember how much you paid for the CF bonnet ? I can't find it on the ESS website.

Stave off boredom?

Crumbs, if I'm bored I can usually find something better to do than write a website! Usually it involves my hobby - my Porsche 944 S2. Which is what this forum is all about anyway - look at the top of the page, if in any doubt. Yes, up there .... ^^^ And what are you doing being bored anyway? That nasty four-letter word beginning with "W" usually gets in the way well before the first trembles of boredom can be felt ...

Crumbs. The people on here eh? What's the world coming to?

Oli.

(Nice website - clear and well laid out. What are you trying to do with it tho'? Is it for your - bored - amusement, or to tell people about the car, or both? Knowing what the aim is will help inform my thoughts about it. Good collection of links tho' - the sort of thing that will be of use to other enthusiasts, as a kind of ready-made 944 foxmarks page.)

Thanks [:D]
The price is tricky as I bought it with lots of other bits so I got a bit of a deal, but I seem to remember it was in the region of £800.

There's no point to the site really, just a bit of fun. The boredom comes from not having seen the car for more than a total of a few minutes in the last 5+ months! Don't worry though, I'll make up for it in polishing time once it's back [;)]

That's a good enough reason ... I can understand that!

One thought would be that the page of modifications is good, but without much explanation. A bit of wordage around each modification, explaining what the change is and why, could be an idea.

Also the page on the car as standard was a bit short - I came to the end of it and felt that I wanted to know more. So perhaps something about the car itself, the linage (924 became 944 which became the 968 etc), where it was made, what the specifications were as standard and so on.

Just my £0.02's worth.

Thanks Oli, that's a great help. I'll have another look and see what I can add. I'm a bit limited on pics of the various stages of my car which is why the about page is a bit limited, I'll have a rethink and see what I can do to make it work better.

Good site Peter, you can do one for mine when I get it back [:D]

Nice to see your repairs coming along nicely, I can't wait to see it in the flesh, it is going to be a bit of a monster when finished and quite pretty too. You realise you will have to keep it clean now and can't just show up to trackdays/ meetings with it looking dirty and scruffy [;)]

No chance, think I'll just have it resprayed each time instead of washing it [:D]

Since reading your last mamoth posts on this project, I was wondering whether a website was on the way....sure enough - nice one. (just hope the bank manager does not get bored too quickly [:D])

A very interesting restoration but what would put me off doing a project is the differential between input costs and final value.

If one added up the total cost including the initial car, replacement parts, specialist work plus one's own labour costed at a reasonable rate per hour I believe the cost would be staggering.

If when the car is completed what would it's resale value be compared to the 'Cost' ?

Tony I agree it makes no financial sense if you look at resale value, but for me that's an irrelevance as it will never be sold. The way I view it is I've already had my values worth out of it over the last decade and this should allow me to continue to enjoy it for many more. You could also argue that I could have lost almost as much in depreciation on a newer Porsche over the same time.

The other way to look at it is to add up all you have spent and then look at what else you could have bought to fit your specific needs. There is not much out there that will match Peters low weight, excellent handling and power output yet still be able to drive every day, carry stuff to the tip and have a breeze on the track.

I have never understood the reasoning behind buying a car and already looking at it's resale value [&:] In the vast majority of cases cars will always cost you money, they are an expense and not an asset. As long as you are prepared to pay the cost and reconcile it against the enjoyment the car gives you then that's what it's all about.

Our cars are basically expensive toys, the beauty is they can be eminently practical too [:)]

... should Mrs zcacogp ever speak with you I'd be grateful if you could emphasise the last part of that statement, and not mention the first part at all!

Thanks, and all that ...

Regarding the cost of cars, the bit I find hardest to rationalise is the cost of changing when staying with the same genre of vehicle. For a laugh I specced a new 330i exactly as per my own 2001 model and was staggered to find it would cost £36K. So I am test driving one on Thursday to see what the extra £28k premium I would have to pay would buy me. I suspect it'll be much the same, but slightly quieter [;)]

I have no real idea of what your project has cost but it may have been more cost effective to have 'pooled' the costs and bought a late 996 Turbo for the same money ? [:)]

In any event, I admire your efforts and the finished result and you must have a sense of pride in restoring a Classic.

That in itself is priceless.

Interesting suggestion, but I can't imagine Peter will have spent the best part of 40K [:D]

Trackday costs - tyres / brakes must be horrendous on a 996 turbo! - they must weigh 50-60% more than Peter's car, and you can't even go to the tip in them [;)]

Thanks Tony,
It's thankfully quite a way off 996 turbo money, although for what my opinion is worth I honestly wouldn't swap, they really don't do much for me. However if it was one of the last 3 generations of RS then I might be a bit keener to consider it [:)]
