My Porsche 944 Restoration Project

Hello everyone I have been browsing this site now for a while and commenting on various different post but I have now decided that I should start a project thread for my own car. I was informed of this car by a friend of my families and me being as eager as ever decided to go and view the car. The car itself is a B registered 1985 Porsche 944 2.5 8valve automatic. The car was laid up for twelve years due to an overheating problem but nevertheless I thought why not take a gamble and I am so glad that I did.
I wasn't sure what to look for when viewing one of these cars so after doing a bit of research on here from other members I went back armed with the knowledge that I needed to know before buying the car.

The pictures below show how the car was found;

As you can see from the above pictures I really did not know what to expect but to my absolute shock undereath is solid and there are only three tiny repairs on the whole car. As soon as the deal was done for what I thought was a very reasonable 600 pounds I trailored the car back to my house. Detailing is a very big passion of mine soI couldnt wait to get stuck in to see what she cleaned up like after twelve years in the elements.
I started on the interior first it had the usual cracks on the dashboard but we have now had a second one retrimmed.

The dashboard had the usual cracks all over it which we resolved by buying a second one and having it retrimmed.

Once I had done this I switched my attention to the outside as I have mentioned before detailing is a passion of mine so I gave it a thorough clean followed by a decontamination of the paintwork and then a good machine polish obviously there is a long way to go before I am satisfied but here are some of the results.

Looking much better than when you first got it.

It looks very familiar to me. Do you have any paperwork regarding previous owners and was one Neil Macmillan?

I wondered if it was Neil's there were not that many auto's around - I must have a picture somewhere, probably on film though!

I saw one exactly the same in 1989 at the then Porsche dealers called 'Heddell & Deeks' now PC Bournemouth. The auto put me off at the time, though I am sure its fine.

What a bargain at £600 though. Best of luck with the car.

It is possible to convert it to a manual. Or as the Merkins like to say, a Manuel.

Probably, not sure if the Torque tube is different? you could also consider a 968 tiptronic box but you 'd also need the ECU etc...which
could be tricky to get working..

It would probably be cheaper to buy another car than convert one to manual, and you would ruin it's USP. One day someone is absolutely going to want an Auto 944 and you will be in the driving seat....see what I did there? [:)]

you have a cracking Porsche there and what a bargain .
body work looks great after being out in all weathers for that long
keep the photos coming
