My practical transport is...

...my 964

I use my '91 964 Tip as my practical car. It is the one that takes me to the Post Office, to clients or to Tesco, and is the car of choice for long distance.c My unpractical car is a modified MG Midget, that also does all of the above, except the long distance (I don't want to go deaf!)

My 964 is available all year and lives outside (the Midget gets the garage). It will probably cover 10k miles this year. (It replaced a 3.2 at the end of last year that previously did this duty.)

Is there anyone else out there that is using a 964 as plain, everyday transport? If not, I am sorry because it makes a superb and cheap everyday workorse. It cost me less than a top-of-the-range Mondeo!

The really surprising thing is the number of comments and conversations that I have with complete strangers. So many people seem to think that it is wonderful, and it does me good because I can become so used to the car that I can forget just how good it is. In all my years of driving Porsches, (944s and then 911s) I have never experienced any of the antagonism that some have mentioned. Indeed, it has been quite the opposite - almost an embarassment of people getting out of my was, as a fast car, even when I have not been in a hurry!

What surprises me is how seldom I see a 964 (or 993) on the road. These are practical cars that will only deteriorate if left sitting in a garage. They were engineered to be thrashed along the Autobahn without mercy. Leaving them at home whilst driving the hatchback to work is doing them no favours. My car is lonely and would like to see other 964s out on the road. So come on, folks. Get out there and enjoy your car every time you drive - not just as a plaything.

A kindred spirit!! I too use my 964 that I bought from another member (Thanks DAVE!!!) in January this year and I do an 87 mile round-trip commute in it each day that includes some nice windy roads and some dual carriageway and lots of multi-lane traffic light junctions - I feel I ought to apologise to the Subaru Impreza driver that I burnt off this morning, yeeha! - I thoroughly enjoy the drive to work each day and even more the drive home! I estimate I will rack about 18k miles up this year. BUT I totally agree with you - these cars are meant to be driven!
As a first time Porsche owner, are drivers meant to wave to each other?

Yes, I use my 1990 C4 as daily transport. I can't stay out of it, just as I couldn't stay out of my 3.2 Carrera until, er, well, erm, I wrote it off [:(]

I agree that regular use keeps the car running reliably.

Well done! I have always had a terror of two-wheeled motorised transport, despite its clear speed advantage!
