My pride and joy as never let me down until tonight, and just when we have bought a new house that needs renovating!!

Ok driving home the clutch started to feel uneven then the gears started to feel notchy. then after another mile and home i couldn't get 1st,2nd, or reverse, I could just get 3rd! This all happened within about 3 miles.

The clutch was changed about 2 1/2 years 25000 miles.

The clutch pedal still feels as if it's working under pressure if a bit uneven.

Any advise please.

cheers

Chris

Most likely one of the clips has broken where it goes in a bracket on the side of the gearbox. Most people repair it by attaching it with a cable tie.

The picture shows one which has a broken cable, but you can see wwhere a repair has been made with a cable tie.

Richard is it easy for me to be able to get under and see or are there any covers need removing. I've managed to push it into my new garage but i'm now at home. We don't move for another 4 weeks or so.

As usual thanks for the help.

You would have to get the car up in the air just to get your head underneath. I think you should be able to see the cables. Why not stick a digital camera under there and take some random shots. You might be able to see if it has popped off.

Richard thanks, stupid question but what side of the car, if the cable as snapped are they expensive and is it a straight forward job for an indi.

Cheers.

Driver's side. £214.13 inc vat, and a book time of 2hours 18mins. If one of them has popped off, just tie-wrap it back on.

Of course, it might not be the cables........

Richard what else could it be? the blood is rushing to my head!!

I guess it could be a selector problem inside the gearbox. The reason I think it is probably the cables is that it happened quite quickly, and the cables popping off is a very common problem. Go for the easy thing first before you think about increasing the mortgage on the new house. [;)]

Well bad news it's not the cables. I got it picked up and taken to my local indi. Straight onto the ramp both cables in place and connected as they should be. The gearbox is comming off in the morning. My 18 year old son is in the army and on tour in Afganistan I only mention it as it puts things into prospective, plus the car and the house give me something else to worry about.

I'll update tomorrow.[:-]

How common are the clips coming off or the cables breaking Richard? I drive down to Portugal two times per year and I wouldn't like this happening on a long trip?

I've probably heard of it happening 10-20 times. I don't suppose it would do any harm to put a cable tie around there as a preventative measure as it is simple and cheap.

Is that 10 - 20 times for the clips to come off or is that for teh cable actually breaking, it looks as if the cables have pulled out of the ends.

That's 10-20 osscasions of the clip breaking. That's in about 6 years, from here and Renntech. I have only heard of a couple of cables breaking. The photo above is from one of those - another member of this forum.

ok it's not that bad, the pressure plate has come away from the clutch, so just a new clutch. The clutch had got a bit heavier a few moths back but not that heavy. I did report over the winter of a strange noise like a belt slipping but it could't be detected, it went away in the warm weather but a few weeks ago it came back. I just wonder if it might be the clutch, it only ever did it under load.

Thanks for the advice guys.
