My S2 is an S1!!!

Had the car for a month now. So I took a good look at my log book and nowhere on it could I see S2, just 944. Also the engine size is (from memory) 2,647 or something like that, basically a 2.7. So I made my peace with this, even thought the guy assured me it was an S2, after all it only cost me 3K and had an engine rebuild 50K ago. But now I have oil leaking from various spots (could potentially be from a single leak) and the clutch is becoming slightly unresponsive under acceleration and starts to smell when full throttle in 4th 5th gear on the motorway. I feel like I haven't had SUCH a great deal after all. These are the two main problems, plus the car could prob do with a full service. Looks like minimum a thousand pounds. So I have infact paid over 4K for an S1, of which the gearbox may have done a quarter of a million miles! My question is sell it or keep it? To look at inside and out the car is brand new, especially after a proper polish. But could I be flogging a dead horse here!?
 
First off, I'd say a really nice 2.7 could be worth £3k, if it's rust free with excellent paintwork then it doesn't sound excessive, although it is close to the top of the market.

However this doesn't make it acceptable for you to have been lied to at the point of sale, I assume its been made to look like an S2 (this is often a sign that the car has been repaired following a bump), but the appearance of the engine should have be a dead giveaway. Was this a private seller or a dealer?

I'd get an indie to look at the leak, it could be something cheap and simple, possibly exacerbated by using too thin an oil.

I'd suggest it's not unusual for the first service under new ownership to cost £1k+, there will always be things you want to put right that the previous owner probably didn't. But if the clutch is on its last legs then there's quite a big bill looming on that alone.

Why do you think the gearbox has done 250k, is it a replacement? Unless it's very noisy I wouldn't worry, but check when the gearbox oil was last changed, it can make a nice difference.

If you sell it I suspect you'll take a fair hit, if the car's nice, you're enjoying it and once sorted runs well then I'd suggest keeping it as you'll most likely have had the big bills out of the way and can get on with some trouble free motoring.
 
I suppose being charitable, the vendor may have made the mistake that some do in thinking that S2 = Oval dash [&:]

Bring it to RAS 26th Sept for FREE FULL CHECK ...... Smells you have the rubber clutch .... !
 
Are you local to Warwickshire at all? I'm sure a couple of us could check your car out.
 
Certainly seems to me you've been a victim of the endless misunderstanding between series one and two cars, the old 924 dash or the newer oval dash, and the "s" cars. Even more confusing, the various Lux cars and the original 16 valve "s" kept the original body shape with the front bumper right up to the end, whereas the "S2" and turbo had a very different "bluff" front end. It annoys me that people continue to refer to later cars as "series 2", confusing everyone, even though it's technically accurate.

Post a pic and we'll be sure. Either way, we've banged on for years about these cars costing £1K per year to run if you buy a good one. I'd even up that average now, as the once-in 20-years issues like bodywork, wishbones, clutches etc are becoming more common. To be honest, if you need a clutch, a service and have a serious oil leak (they all leak a few drops) then £1K isn't going to cover it. When were the belts, rollers, oil seals and water pump done? How recent are the fuel and brake lines? Are the sills really sound viewed internally? On the plus side, you've got arguably the pick of the 944 range in many people's opinion so if the bodywork is good then why not keep on top of the mechanicals? Even £2k per year on repairs isn't the end of the world when you drive a classic Porsche that you only paid a few £k for.

Apologies for being so realistic, but there have been a fair few people through the forum over the last few years who have had to think carefully about whether the car they bought is actually worth the investment to keep it running at it's best.
 
I'm not sure Paul. It could work two ways and be rung as I've seen happen to a mate before (he bought a BMW 325 Sport, which was actually a Cat D' 325 Sport logbook on a 'scrapped' 325i SE shell (it wasn't a cut and shut and was sound but with that chequered a history).

People Ive spoken to seem to think that it can't be the clutch and that if the clutch was going then it would slip noticably when driving. Also a friend sat in it with the handbrake on and tried to pull away, the clutch did not slip and the car tried to pull away which pointed to it not being the clutch. But then I question why I am not getting the same power delivery as when I bought it? Is this an early sign of a dying clutch? Could I be over-analyzing it? Maybe she could be losing pressure, related to the oil leak? Could it be this oil burning on something that Im smelling at high revs as the engine heats up?

Anyway I hope to be able to attend the RAS, where is it? I am based in South London, Dorking.

It is definately not an S2, the front bodywork is totally different.

Hope to see you at RAS, I would certainly get the clutch checked out.
 
I half agree with Scotty in that the buyer must make themselves aware of what they are buying but lots of people add / remove badges and change trim or other items for standard or non standard bits to make cars look newer / better or even Q cars.
The fact remains there are lots of people out there who will are prepared to misrepresent for profit and if they aren't traders they can get away with it
With 944s there is scope for misunderstandings in this area, so it is all the more vital to have the neccesary knowledge.
Whatever the rights and wrongs of the purchase we should now be helping Lloyd to get his desirable and rare 2.7 running properly.
