My strange intermittent rev counter cure...

My rev counter usually only works once warmed up though occasionally it will be fine from cold like it was today.

However I've found that to wake it up I need to open the glove box and slam it shut!

Is there any wiring down the glove box direction that's for the rev counter which could be affected by the slamming of it?

Almost certainly a bad earth somewhere - I had the same with two Mk1 Golf GTi's.

The easiest solution was simply to find the earth wire in the dashboard harness and splice a new wire into it, and then made a new earth somewhere in the dash area (a self-tapping screw into a new hole in a mounting bracket somewhere was ideal). Attach the newly-spliced wire to the new screw and the problem went away for good.

Oli.

Out of interest, what kind of "bounce" do people get on their tacho when cranking? My s2 is a very slight bounce of the needle whilst cranking (or no bounce at all if it is going to play silly and not start, yes, I really should change my crankshaft sensor), but the turbo has a real big initial "kick" when the key is first turned. Which is more normal, or is this a typical difference between the two engines?
