MY05 and Used Boxster prices

Anyone have a view on where used Boxster prices are going to go with the MY05 launch? Seems that given a lot of what used to be optional kit is now standard, and the bhp uprating, used Boxster prices should come down? Or am I being too optimistic (as an as yet non-owner).

too optimistic (yet) - until the first wave of 2nd hand "new" boxsters hit the market. Why? 1 year+ waiting lists at present for new model, so if you want one you'll buy 2nd hand or be prepared for a wait, and after that there'll be a year before many are on the used market, and even then they will demand a premium.

At the end of the day, someone who has £25K in their pocket isn't in the market for a "new" shape, and won't be for years, so their market hasn't changed. If anything, the publicity and press surrounding the boxster launch is likely to force a wave of people to the dealers, be told about the year wait, and then say "how about that one then", so the prices might even solidify slightly due to the raised demand.

On the other hand, all these new 997's and 987's will mean plenty of 996 and current Boxsters in the OPC's as trade-ins. The launch of the new model may not have a direct effect on the used price, but the spike in the number of used cars may ripple through in the next few months.

Talked to an OPC about this this week. They say the effect of the new model has now been factored into s/h prices, some small lowering of price but as the orders come in for the new model delivery dates are moving out and prices will stabalise. In summary, residuals on Boxsters will remain as good as ever.

I think prices will soften a bit because there will be more used cars in circulation.

However, the best examples will always be the most sought after and command the best prices. Cars in poor condition, with high mileage, low spec or iffy history will be harder to sell or will be much cheaper.

I have just bought an X Reg (subject to inspection) and think that market has bounced a bit low and will stabilise soon. Surprised that the gap between '97's and 00/01 models is not that different despite spec and engine changes.

A porsche will always be desirable and will never fall as low as, for example, a BMW Z4. Look at the way old 944's have performed. Good ones, in relative terms, fetch the money.

Plus, the new boxster is not that far removed in style terms from the old (and I prefer the old interior). None of the quasi MX5 interior going on.
