MY07 - ticking and rattle on start up

Hi Chaps,

Hope xmas is going good....

Finally got my MY07 and life is good, but have some concerns with some engine noises.....

On cold start up there is a what I can only describe as slight ticking sound behind drivers side, I also notcied when outside on cold startup, it sounds like a gremlin is in the back of the engine with a kango hammer doing some pipe work.... basicallys it is loud like metal rattling. The ticking goes away once warmed up, as for the Gremlin I cannot tell as I have not managed to drive and be on the outside simulataneously [:D]

I have read various threads on 2K rattle etc. but would assume [8|] this had been addressed....

Appreciate any comments or sights before I go to OPC...

Thanks in advance
GG

Sounds like either the tappets or the injectors which can be a loud ticking on initial start up, but should diminish as the engine warms up

Agree with Black80XSA, sounds like the tappets to me which is normal but they should only be noisey for a short period after start up.

If the metal rattling noise is only audible at 2,100 rpm and not below or above that range, and disappears once the engine temp reaches normal, it could be the infamous 2K rattle. Surely Porsche have eradicated that problem by now?

Hi,
I had both noises on my 05 Boxster S, the ticking as mentioned goes away, the hammering is a valve in a pipe on the oil system (as it was explained to me) which my OPC replaced (and cured the hammering) when they changed my steering column due to a 10mm up and down movement.
Never got to the bottom of a gearbox/bearing whine between 2800 and 3200 rpm though, which was annoying as it equated to 70 to 75mph in 6th gear.
Boxster was swopped against my 997 C2S a few days before christmas, very different beasties both excellent in their own right.

Again agree with Black80XSA, once the colder weather is in they are noisy so and so's when they start up. I've had both 986a nd 987 models they all do the same - I've had the ticking on both and had it investigated on both, so as long as it goes away when the engione warms up and the gremlin quietens down or dissapears you should be OK

A question for others out there - for those of you that do high mileage and use your boxster every day, when you leave the car for a few days in cold weather is it my imagination or are the rattles louder.........
