Mystery Bolt

Right, car was in the garage yesterday to have a few things done with one being the Oil + Oil Filter.

Went to pay my mates garage, he said "Now, i dont want you to be alarmed, but i found this in my oil drain can"



Hes not sure if it was there before, but could this be anything from my bottom end? Sure i would of heard it rattle, or my oil pressure would be effected?

On the head it says "Kamax 8.8"
 
Hi Logie,

That looks very similar to the bolt that holds the balljoint onto the steering knuckle. What size head does it have ? think the balljoint bolt is about 15-16mm. Don't think anything that big would be able to escape through the relatively small drain hole in the sump.

I don't actually have a hat, but if I did I'd eat both it the next door neigbours cat it if that is proven to have found it's way both into your sump, and then out through the drain plug.[:-]
 
I thought that, but he said hes not sure. He only found it when he drained the oil. Also, im sure i would of heard it, or my oil pressure would of been affected? Still showing a strong 5 bar pressure :)
 
I agree that I don't think it would have come from inside the sump, but I doubt you'd have heard it if it was in there. You'd probably have noticed whatever it held on not being held on, however.
 
The chances of a bolt that length coming neatly though the sump drain are pretty remote. Most likely it wouldn't have shifted at all if it had been in the sump - it'd most likely have just sat at the bottom. If it were to shift it's pretty unlikely it would have come out - most likely it would have just lodged across the drain. I reckon the bolt was either in the catch can already or your mate is winding you up. Easy way to ease your mind, measure the bolt diameter and length then do a check in PET to see if there are any specialized bolts that marry up. That one looks to have some sort of seal retaining recess cut above the threads - 0 ring or similar?
 
The last garage that did an oil change on mine showed me that the sump plug was magnetic in order to "catch" metal particles and objects in the bottom of the sump.A bolt seems excessive though.
 
The sump plug is magnetic. I had a piece of valve spring on my cab's one once which resulted in a partial head strip only to find it had been repaired previously. Another S2 possibility is cam sprocket teeth on the magnet.
 
The bolt is too dirty to have come from inside of the engine. Colour would have been more uniform, it looks as if has seen some exposure to the elements.

Possibly someone was winding your mechanic up.[:)]

Am I being nieve here but surely there aren't that may bolts that could find themselves into the sump? Big end, bearing and ????
