Mystery oil levels...

Picked up my new 987S this week and am completely smitten with my new 'mistress of the garage', however, a rather puzzling phenomenon manifested itself in the oil check gauge. I checked it first thing on two consecutive mornings and found that it only showed a quarter oil level, which was a little worrying. Took it back to OPC and it promptly showed half full! Checked again and confirmed half full, so rather red faced I drove it away (after a nice coffee from the understanding salesman!).
Has anyone else had this happen? Is it par for the course in the early few miles?
Of course, if there was a blinkin' dipstick (like on my old 986S) the proof would be easy to obtain.
I will be taking a half litre of Mobil 1 with me for our sojourn into France next week just in case (it's going to be hard sticking to 5,000rpm though)!

Rob, whilst I'm sure that you've read the relevant information in the Handbook, may I suggest that you only carry out a check of the oil level when the car is on level ground and with the engine warm; the digital display within the dashboard instruments is accurate but only if you comply with the timing constraints.

Hi Rob,
As Derek mentioned the engine needs to be warm and on level ground but I'm sure you must have been told all this when you took it to the OPC. Take a read after re-fuelling at the fuel pump; a good forecourts is always on level grounds.

Was the salesman not at all concerned that a new car is showing half full!!!!? It should be completely full or am I missing something?

Last Thursday I was caught in the jam on the M40 and sat there for an hour.

Just out of interest, I ran the oil level check from time to time. Well, you have to something! The results were very variable - essentially, the level steadily rose from 1 bar below min to 2 bars above min. As the consensus was below the max I eventually added a bit from the bottle in the luggage compartment.

Thanks for the kind advice chaps - yes, the check was done while parked in the garage and on a flat floor, and I had no problems with my old car. It does seem to make a difference once it's been driven and the engine warmed up and then the reading is taken.
I think I will add a half litre of Mobil 1, just to be on the safe side, as my last 986S did use half a litre while running in, and then didn't seemingly use a drop after that.
I did point out that it was 'only' half full to the salesman, but he said it was fine like that and did not require any more (well he would given the price of the stuff!).
Cheers

Cheers chaps
Yes, I think I'll take great care when adding -the quarter litre idea is a very good one - thanks Mark.
