hi how much should it cost from a garage to supply and fit a rear n/s wheel bearing
do the need a special tool to do the job ?
its for a 1987 944s

Does this help? http://www.arnnworx.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=page&id=20&chapter=1

Any decent garage would manage without the tool above, but it's probably quicker if you do have one.

I can give some recent advice.

I bought the bearings / lock nuts myself for my 968 and the local garage fitted them for £70 per (rear) side.

At a rough guess:

Hourly rate inc VAT of say £60 per hour

Maybe 4.5hrs, = £270 then the cost of parts.

Hardest part/ time consuming will be changing the bearings without the specialist tool

I did it myself with the tool and its pretty straight forward although time consuming. You certainly wouldn't want to be doing it without heavy duty air tools

I did both of mine last week, about 6hrs in all. Not too difficult a job if you have the bearing puller/press. I did it all on my driveway with only hand tools.

Just checked my history file, had mine done last October by the Indie I used to use. Labour 3hrs = £189 plus bearing at £71.45
both + VAT...total £312.54

Out of interest, how did you become aware it was failing?.......I didn't notice anything amiss, it was identified by my Indie
whilst investigating another matter. I was slightly surprised as it hadn't been given an advisory at MOT 3 months/700miles prior.

I did mine through preventative maintenance, nothing in the history and since I run 18" wheels I presumed they'd be due a change. Once the old ones were removed they felt very loose (spun freely) and one had a burnt grease smell so a job worth doing.
