Nail in Tyre - Repair or Replace

Discovered this afternoon that I have acquired a nail in the middle of the tread of the near side rear tyre. It is still holding 2.7 bar of pressure so doesn't seem to be a problem and if I hadn't taken the wheel off I would never have known about it.

Apparently it can be repaired (safely, i am assured) or I can buy a new one for £250. Obviously, I am tempted to go for the repair, especially as there is 6mm of tread left. Is this a safe alternative or should I go for a new one and have complete peace of mind?

I've had several tires with nails in them repaired and have never had a problem with it. As long as the nail is in the central area of the tread and not near the sidewall, it's fine. I would go with the £15 repair job every time.

I had a rear tyre repaired, in a similar position and with plenty of tread left. It never gave me a problem.
However I notice in the manual it says to never repair a tyre [;)]

Go for the repair. I did on a nearside rear tyre which was 3 months old, went to Germany on it down the Autobahn at 160, at times, fully loaded with wife and cases... and did a track day. No probs. I changed it when it was worn out last month.

Thanks for the replies. Panic now over - the nail, or rather tack, had only gone into the tread block and hadn't penetrated the tyre. I'll save my £250 for when it needs tyres next year.

Bugger, mine went in for service and they (the OPC) reported that my N/S rear had a nail in it. It (the tyre) had only done 4k from new.

When I requested a repair they said it couldn't be done due to the speed rating of the tyre and relieved me of £350 for a new tyre!!
