NAV SYSTEM

Is it worth it ? Probably not ..........

You may be able to get a later disc set but it will still be at least 8 years out of date.

Even the PCM3 is still hopelessly outdated although they can be upgraded to 7 digit postcode facility ..... for a price.

OPC will want anything from £150 (whilst it`s having some other work done) to £500.

Better to use Google maps on the phone.

Is it worth updating the Nav system on my 2005 997?

If it is how do I do it?

Many thanks

Absolutely! I have upgraded my 2006 twice now and while it's never going to be as good as the latest satnav units or head units around, if you want to keep the originality of the PCM 2.1 then why wouldn't you upgrade it to last year's final Porsche update?

There are plenty of instructions on the web how to do it, just make sure that first you check the version that your unit already has, as if it is the original A or B version software you have to upgrade in steps and not straight to rev D.

If you pm me your email I can send you the Porsche workshop instructions that explain how to check your version and also detail the upgrade process.

I used Satnavdvd and updated to the latest maps. As has been said you need to check what version of software your PCM is using, there is plenty of information out there. Its never going to be as easy to use or offer the features of the latest offering from Garmin or TomTom, but if you want to keep the originality of the car it might be worth it.

Seriously, unless you're happy to write off hundreds of £££, just get a TomTom. It's easier to update, and can be placed on the windscreen in a much better position for viewing (I have mine at the bottom directly over the centre speaker, angled towards me)

And forget using Google maps on your phone. No offence, but it's total pap.

Just use your phone and use WAZE (free App, with real time traffic updates, provided by users. All the Ubers in London use it, and I find it amazing) agreed, google maps is awful.
