Navigation CD (again!)

Hi,

Been doing some research about Nav CDs... i have a PCM2.0 unit (with software version 3.0) and am desperately trying to obtain some updated nav cds.

It seems the the older PCM units can be cheaply upgraded using the GM CDs, but unfortunately not the PCM2.0... Speaking to the local OPC, an update was released in 2005 but that costs £350 and the maps are based on 2003 data...

If I was going to spend £350, i'm almost tempted to consider swapping the PCM2.0 with a PCM2.1 unit (they look VERY similar) if possible. The car is a 2004 986 which I understand means it has the MOST fibre-optics that the 987s seem to have.

Any suggestions or pearls of wisdom ?

I've had the same problem on my '03 Boxster S. I live in the Midlands are the M6 Toll isn't on the system. On a trip to Ireland earlier this year, most of that country wasn't on either!

I spoke to my OPC (Sutton Coldfield), who checked and told me that no update was available and that the latest system uses eight discs. I then got in touch with the manufacturer, who just refered me to Porsche.

So it seems a £200 Tom Tom is the only choice. I bought my car at a year old, but I think if I had paid £2000 to have as an extra when new I would be pretty p'd off.

Same here - bought mine 2nd hand so didn't pay the full original 2k... i like the system a lot even without navigation but it is really annoying that navteq don't support it and porsche don't care...

Surely there are enough of us out there with PCM 2.0 units (presume they were fitted to all models, incl. 996 and cayennes)...

Up to date discs are available from here:-http://satnavmaps.com/index.html (call, there not listed) for Porsche PCM units they use modified Vauxhall (NavTech?) discs.

Scaramanga do your 2004 maps include the M6 toll road, I've just updated to version 3 software and Aug 2004 maps from version 2 and 2002 maps and would be interested to know before I get lost around there again.

i don't think my maps do include the m6 toll... i think my maps are 2004 but use map data from 2003 apparently....

the GM/Vauxhall discs only work on the older PCM units, so if (like me) you've got a PCM2.0 unit (even with software 3.0), you need the porsche/navtech discs which are the expensive ones (which have 2005 map data).... really frustrating....

My car is a 2003 but came with 2002 maps, the ones I have now are Aug 2004 (date on the front of disc). Bad news if it still misses out the Toll[].

I've emailed Satnavmaps to see exactly what they can do. I'll report back.
