Navigation Update

Does anyone have any idea how much the navigation update costs?
I'm guessing it can only be done by an OPC?
From what I understand the update upgrades the system to allow Postcode input and uses TMC amongst other things...
If anyone has had the update, do you think it is worth the money?
Thanks,
J

I can't think of a worse way to waste £400.
Post code search - only first 4 digits[]
TMC - some genuine benifit to be had there if the maps were up to date[]
Map data - Still years behind what's actually available from Navteq.[]

Not sure I'd pay to upgrade it[&:]
Its 5 digits which worked great for Europe but not the UK..
TMC recently saved me a 3 hour wait after it informed me of a closure of the M25 and the M40, it routed me the other way round, sure it eventually came over the radio but by then I'd have been committed to anti/clockwise...
One of the few times I've thought, mmmm glad I've got that..

I was initially impressed with the SatNav in my 997, but much prefer the system in my wife's BMW 3 Series.

Also, on a recent trip across to Kings Lynn, I was following my father in his Saab in which he uses TomTom on his PDA. We about 40 or so miles from Kings Lynn, he took a different exit from a roundabout to the one suggested by my car, so I decided to see which SatNav system was best.

To cut a long story short, I didn't hang around (well... as much as the Fenland roads / speed limits allow) and he reached the destination a full 5 minutes ahead of me!

Suffice to say, the Porsche SatNav system is not that good!

Personally I find the TMC to be very helpful and it works across Europe very well indeed. Postcode input in Europe is also very good. No navigation is perfect, no matter what make. I have access to various and I actually like the Porsche system. Lack of 7 digit UK postcode is fairly unforgivable. Value for money, the update is not.

I've recently bought the pan-European SatNav module for my Nokia N95, and will be putting it to the test tomorrow when I have to drive from Alicante Airport to La Manga

I'll let you know how well it works when (if) I get back!

Contact Mike Wooster (Berty987), he seems to know this subject very well. He helped me out when I upgraded mine to the same 2007 maps.

I have 9972S from 2004 and bought updated mapping in 2006 from ebay for less than £100. At first I got an error saying incompatible but all the maps and the directions including the updated traffic info is showing perfectly, even when going to Europe. I think the risk of it not functioning is minor as it reads the information from the DVD just like any DVD reader.

For me it was a significant improvement from the 2004 info, however postcode search is still a pain and not as easy as in the Gen2 cars.

Good luck,
Max

If your car already has a 2006 map disc then it probably will not require the multimedia update CD for the navigation drive. If the car has a 2004 disc then it will require both the multimedia update for the DVD (navigation drive) as well as a PCM software update. There are a few issues with updating the PCM to be aware of , especially if the car is equipped with the Bose sound system and amplifier. Its quite a complex subject so better if you post your existing model level software which can be found by pressing MAIN and TRIP buttons on the PCM. The screen will then display a software version on the header bar and a list of all the installed components. By selecting each component in turn you can review the software level for each device. This is a read only menu so don't be alarmed by accessing it.

Hi Berty,

Here are my details:

Model of car: 997 C2S
Month and year of registration: November 2004
Date on the DVD disc currently in use: 10.2004
Bose upgrade? Yes SW Versions: 3.3
[FONT=verdana,geneva"]"PCM" code: 05024ED1 / 4705
"AMP" code: 00017400/1704[FONT=verdana,geneva"]
From that can you deduct what I require?

Thanks,
MaKS
