Navigation update

My PCM is showing as version 3 but the Navigation hasn't been updated to accept full postcodes. Both my local OPC's are owned by Stratstone (Wilmslow and Bolton) and their cost for upgrade is GBP 329.00. I see in the past that some people have had this done for GBP 149.99. Is anyone aware of any dealers offering a lower rate for this work?

That "offer" price is currently not available as far as I'm aware. Oh and I suspect the £329 price is probably plus VAT

Sounds like a bargain @ £329.00 plus or including VAT. I've just been quoted £700 inc VAT by PC Leeds for an upgrade to my 2011 Boxter.

Judging by some of the threads I’ve seen on other forums the current maps are about 2 years out of date but there is an update due around December. No idea how old the maps will be then but might be worth clarifying before you consider any work

I have a BMW 3-series and a BMW m'bike and on both of those vehicles I get 'free' map and software updates to the satnav. Says something about Porsche that they charge such extornionate prices for it on their cars.

Indeed, on the car, the UK maps are updated regularly and automatically using the BMW SIM card that is built into the car. So you do not even have to pay the data charges to download the new maps. It all happens automatically in the background.

On the m'bike (which uses a BMW branded Garmin device), I have to download the updates to my laptop and then from there load them into the satnav. But the plus is that I can plot/plan routes/tours on my laptop using Garmin's Basecamp software and then transfer these to the m'bikes satnav device. In the same way, I can put speed camera databases onto the satnav. Oh that I could do that on the device in my Porsche. What Porsche offer is really behind the times and they need to get on the ball

MB are just as bad as Porsche! On the C class, on cars to about 2011 you could re-use the genuine DVD's - buy them second hand for considerably less than the £150 new cost. So, MB changed the system so on later cars you need a code from the MB mainframe in Germany (at a cost of about £50) specific to the VIN of your car, only then will it accept the update DVD's (which are about £130) and you cannot re-use the DVD's on another car! Considering the upfront cost of the satnav option on our cars compared to a top of the range Garmin or Tom Tom (with free for life map and speed camera updates!) it's farcical.

When I specified the 718 I asked the salesman to review it and tell me if he thought I'd missed anything. He said what about PCM/satnav, I said I'd use my portable garmin thanks in both cars.

So, what are the benefits from paying £2k extra for PCM?

The BMW I just sold for the 981 had the free updates via it's own wifi connection, which is free for the first 5 years.

The update may be seen as trivial and I understand the need for them to charge for the time and data etc, but not being able to enter a full postcode is a bit silly. Also, the speed limit display is pretty much redundant due to the maps being so outdated. I will wait until new year before pulling the trigger... OPC confirmed that I'd receive the early 2016 update and the next one should be coming very soon.

I thought the 718 used Apple CarPlay which I understood to be an extension of your phone. So you'd get at least Apple Maps, but maybe Google Maps too.
