Near death experience !

Massive blow out last night , left rear at serious leptons. Tyre now looks like the one on Mansells car in Melbourne. Lucky to have held it on the black stuff. The noise was horrendous .Only got steady once down to 50 , but pretty exciting before that ! The scarry part is the tyre is only two weeks old. Bridgestone, N rated and OPC fitted. After faffing with the collapsible spare managed to get home an hour later .
Culprit was brand shiny new masonry nail . I always walk around the car before every drive so must have picked it up on the way.

OPC have sourced a new one and are collecting , I cannot see any damage other than the tyre . Does anyone have similar experience? What might have also happened to the adjacent mechanicals . Like axles, brake disc, geometry, etc.
 
Lucky outcome, even luckier still that the OPC has sourced you a Bridgestone tyre, rather short supply at the moment...

Echo Gary's comments. Do you have TPMS? Just wondering whether my confidence in this is misplaced.
 
Yes the PSM was on and yep probably made the difference. I had a tyre go 30 years ago which sent the car into a violent spin , smashed every panel and left both front wheels bent under the engine ( big old ford muscle car) and that was at about 70 or so. I was on a bridge and the car was like a pinball .
I definitely had " help" with the control of the car . I am no Mansell , he is a god! But there was no violent over correct sway and ossillation. It just dampened down.

Makes me realise how good the beast is and perhaps how much less I actually input ....

I still am concerned about the potential over torque of the drive shafts and so on, I guess I'll know after Tuesday when the techs get into it.
As for the tyre replacement , the OPC did not seem fazed at all , will be there on Tuesday. or so they say.

I had a suspected tyre failure on the M6, car flipped in to a slide down the central reservation, held it for about 100 yards then if flipped again, shot across the Mway, hit the bank and flipped end over end a couple of times before rolling back down the bank coming to rest on the passenger door.

No injuries though, not bad for a soft top toyota :)

Yeah, I just know that if I have a blow-out at 150+, it'll be GAME OVER..
 
Woh GaryC sounds like that was very very close , glad to hear you were (relatively) unscathed, but not something you will forget.
Now I have to say that while I was moving along it was nothing like 150. That is silly speed on a public road and at that speed not many would live to tell the tale.Worse you could easily take someone with you[:'(]. Having nearly lost my youngest that way I have no wish to put someone else through that sort of pain. Naturally, like all of us, I would never exceed the national speed limits[;)]. That sort of transwarp rate is best kept for the track .You can go much faster and not stress out so much.
I have no problem making (rapid) progress, but the average Joe has no idea just how blindingly quick these cars can be .

Car back today . Immaculate from OPC Swindon, complete with new rear tyre. Rim undamaged. Other bits untouched. Had the 24k service as well .
No Lotto tickets this week then.

Motorways are so quiet and relaxed its easy to forget how much energy your car has at 70.

Until it all goes wrong, still remember that absolute quiet as the car left the ground and went upside down.

Mind you, car improvements, particularly air bags have made cars much safer. The air bag saved my life by holding my head steady as the car flipped and rolled.
