Evening all,
Well, it's been nearly a week since collecting the Boxster S and it's been an interesting experience so far.
My first impressions of the performance was a pleasant surprise, given that my other other steed is a GTS 997. It delivers a nice punchy bit of low down torque and does certainly feel good with plenty of revs. Whilst the mileage is much higher than I'd normally go for, it does feel very responsive.
It's not all been plain sailing though..... I noticed on Saturday that I had a shake of the steering wheel at 70-80'ish. All week I'd been doing short runs to the station so hadn't noticed it. I also didn't notice it on my test drive even on during a more spirited drive. I thought it was the usual balancing issue so a visit down to my trusty tyre dealer for checking. The balancing of the front wheels was out by .10 so having being put right, I tested it. Reduced but still there.... I proceeded to have the rear wheels tested, again out by .10. BUT, the OSR appeared to have a buckle, not a huge one but there non-the-less. It also had some damage to the inner part of the rim. Now I know I've not driven down a pot-hole, so I can only assume it's been done before I took ownership of the car. The wheels are two weeks old... This could be a difficult one to prove. Do you think a rear bent wheel would show itself through the steering wheel vibrating (from the back)? I assume it would but want to check it's not something else. The wheels are 19" and I don't think they are helping either. I am wanting to replace the wheels if I'm honest back to an 18" variant with decent tyres. If anyone has any or knows the whereabouts of any good ones, please give me a shout!
Other things - I noticed the headlights whilst locked in place do have movement towards the lower part. Is this a simple case of replacing the seals? Is this a common thing? And a slight tapping from the Left hand side on idle.. Any ideas. The last service was a major done at Porsche Bournemouth done in Sept '12. I'm thinking of getting it to a specialist for a check-over to see if there's anything I need to be aware of. The engine feels very strong and fresh so not sure if it's just a case of replacing the oil for peace and mind....
One schoolboy error on my part is that I listened to the radio whilst giving it TLC over the weekend . Guess what happened next? Yes - the airbag light came on then a click, click, click on trying to turn the engine over. I guess I'm just used to having new cars! Fortunately, I got to the front lid before it went completely so the trusty CTEK did the job of recharging it to a good state! Live and Learn![Smile :) :)](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7)
And driving behaviours.... This was especially apparent on Saturday. Driving the Boxster, you may as well put a "try it" slogan on the back of the car as every tom, dick and harry wanted to prove to me their performance of their BMW 3 or 5. I had one moment whereby the M3 V8 driver was clearly napping which at least made me grin. The point here is that whilst not always the case, I don't find this to be half as bad in the 911.
Anyway, a couple of small purchases made to keep it looking good. I'm loving it overall and don't regret buying it and looking forward to many happy miles ahead of me.
Cheers,
Simon
