Need a new gearbox

Hi all,
I've posted in the past about the gearstick play in my Lux. It wasn't the actual stick as is a common problem. It wasn't the selector on the outside of the box..... so it only left thinking about the actual box itself.

Well the descision on what to do about it was half made for me the other week when it finally went crunch. So I'm now in the need for either a good 2nd hand gearbox, or a reconditioned one. My feeling is that it would be better to have a reconditioned box fitted if it means that I can guarantee that the job is sorted for a while.

So far I've been offered a 2nd hand box of unknown mileage for 500 pounds with just a month guarantee. Sounds a bit steep to me. I've been told that they can be picked up for less. I'm giving a place a call for a quote on a rebuild (thanks Peter for the number).

Does anyone on here have any ideas/experience as to the best route to go down? I don't want to spend the money and still have a sloppy gearchange at the end of it.

Thanks,

Ian, in your locality I would give Hartech in Bolton a call and find out how much a rebuild would be?

500 quid!!!!!! I just bought a 924S box ( same as 944) for £125, and its sweet!

Give FranklinHill Porsche in Coventry a call, Craig Franklins Number is 07736 944124- He's breaking a 944 at the moment, but I'm not sure what year it is....

Give them a call, they're good guys and are well priced! They have an ebay shop as well.....[;)]

PS when the box is out, you can change the bush and sort the 'change out

There is a turbo LSD box on ebay for £750 buy it now currently but of unknown history - apart from the "it was alright before the car was broken" statement.

Ian,

Have you tried Porsha-part near Bury, they will give you a gurantee and I am sure they will be far
cheaper than £500.00.

They wanted £350 when I asked....

I dont mean to sound too obviouse but are you sure the nylon bush on the top of th torque tube hasn`t broken away or failed or is this the common fault you are talking about!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks evryone for your advice.

I'll have a look at some of the options.

Tried a place Peter Empson suggested - Hardy Engineering. They recon about £450 plus VAT for a recon involving bearings and seals only. They would not get involved with actually rebuilding the box and said that by the sound of what I described to them - I have a box of loose metal at the moment. I'll give Hartech and Franklin Hill a try

I'm really quite interested in a proper rebuild both for the peace of mind and to improve the overall drive of the car. I want to go for one of John Mitchell's race shifts but recon it's only worth it if the box is otherwise nice and tight. .

As for your suggestion, never too obvious for me. I guess when Andy and Roger have a look at Promax then we may reach an answer.

I'll check your ad.

Ian, this may be obvious, but if your car is oval dash you will need a box from an oval dash car for the speedo drive.

When I was enquiring about g/box rebuilds I rang http://www.mbporsche-engineering.co.uk/?Gear_Box_Repairs The chap was very helpful but it was expensive for a rebuild and he recommended finding a good s/h box. I've seen them on e-bay for around £100 with a warranty.

I'm swapping my box in the next week for one that cost me £75 from a guy in Wigan who breaks 944's, so fingers crossed. He said he'd driven the car around for a couple of weeks before breaking it so it should be ok.

Mike at MB Engineering is a top guy, the best Porsche guy in the NW and the only I man I trust completley with my cars.

Top guy.

Thanks,

Did notice that at least one of the boxes on e-bay was from a pre 85.5 model. I'll have a work with Mike at MB and keep looking.

Its worth noting that ALL 924S boxes are the same as early 944s......I just put an '88 924S box in my early 85 car...[:)]
