Need advice on potential new car.

looked at a well priced 964 C2 today. Two points that I pulled it up on were :

Very hard to get into 1st or 2nd gear

Rear spoiler stayed up.

Great drive, good condition, lots of history with the car.

Took it to Strasse for a check-up, they said the clutch was fine but could be a problem with the hydraulics (Hydraulic clutch ?) and the spoiler motor assembly was working but not getting a live feed properly.

Does anyone know if these problems are fixable. Strasse priced up to fix these problems and the seller has agreed to reduce the price by £700

any help on my first Porsche purchase greatly appreciated.

cheers

Tony

Hi Tony, not sure about the gearbox problem, if its a 3.2 after 1986 it will have a G50 gearbox which don't have many problems but models before this have the older 915 box which is the same as my 911SC box, they are renowned for being a little quirky and problematic unless looked after, did Strasse suggest what it might be?

Quite often just changing the bushes in the base of the gear stick and some slight adjustment where it attaches to the input shaft (centre on the floor behind the seat belt mounts) can sort this, quite easy to sort yourself if you enjoy weilding a spanner [;)]

As for the rear spoiler it sounds like it has been retro fitted with a 964/993 spoiler, a 3.2 should have a traditional whale tale spoiler fitted or perhaps a flat back with no spoiler at all, they definately didn't have a moving spoiler which suggests the cars been fiddled with a bit, not always a good sign!

Keep us posted [:D]

Thanks Nick, my typing mistake - it`s a 964 C2.

Spoiler was a bit temperamental, on the way to Strasse today it went up but would`nt come down.

Any ideas on the 1st gear problem - just a bit stiff going into 1st gear - fine after that.

We have a 964 , The rear spoiler could be a few things fist one i would check is the micro switch on the spoiler left hand side near the motor the contacts get a bit worn over time easy fix ( same thing happened on our car ) or it could be the speed sensor on the engine not sure on that

Gear change two things you could do fist change the gearbox oil, next clean out the hydraulic oil in the lines with new fluid this will help your brakes as well both cheap fixes if you do them your self and as Nick said may be the bushes on the gear stick

Tony,

I agree with everything that Graham mentioned. The first gear issue is quite common until the gearbox oil warms up. Similarly, a bleed of the clutch slave cylinder (along with the brakes) is also a good idea but as long as everything is OK once warmed up the solution isn't going to be expensive.

The spoiler issue is almost certainly a micro switch adjustment. If it were a speed sensor issue the thing wouldn't go up in the first place.

BTW, you might get some other responses if you'd posted in the 964 section rather than 3.2. The cars are very different an many departments - the spoiler being only one of them.

Mods - is it worth moving it to the 964 forum???

Regards

Dave

thanks guys, TBH, i did put it in the wrong section BUT . . .got a better response in here [:D]

I`ll check the micro switch, and I did suspect it was a hydraulic fluid problem.

cheers Tony
