Need advise on tyre size

Hi. I have an early oval dashboard model and am currently running on 205/50/16 front and 225/50/16 rear tyres. I would like to change the tyres to wider ones but maintaining the same rims.. I was told that it might be possible for me to have 225/50/16 at the front and 245/45/16 at the rear without having to do any modifications. Is this true? Thanks

Hi 944my & welcome to the forum.

I am assuming you have 7" rims front and 8" rims rear.

Different tyre manufacturers have different specified tolerances to rim widths so your first issue will be if the tyres fit on the rims.

Next will be clearances on the tyre walls. Assuming the tyres fit on the rims you might well get away with 245's on the rear.

I would be cautious with 225's at the front as I have seen a 944 with close to catastrophic wear on the inner wall of a tyre. - perhaps try a pair of redundant rear tyres on the front for a few weeks and check regularly.
