Need CS wheels for Turbo Cab. Anyone?

Guest

I keep scanning e-bay, but am struggling to find a good set of forged (CS) wheels for my 944T Cab.
I have a set on at the moment with Contis but they are beyond refurbishment to make them mint.

Even a set capable of refurb would be fine.

If anyone has a set they looking to find a good home for, perhaps they could let me know.
Thanks

Rich S

Have you tried specialist suppliers like Jasmine and Porscheshop? You'll pay top dollar but you could be waiting a long time for a set to come up.

No not yet. I probably ought to.
I keep looking at 17" Boxster wheels - but the car is fairly rare I believe, being Alpine white with deep blue interior, so it probably deserves to stay with its original equipment. There's a lot to be said for sticking with the original 16" wheels as designed as well.

Hi Rich,

Someone I know mentioned c.£700 with tyres.
Whether that's true or not I don't know!

Ideally need to change my discs as well, as the hubs are rusting badly - Sebro come painted I believe.

Turbo Cabs never came on the CS wheels. They would have been on the normal D90 rims that were in the larger Turbo widths of 7.5x16 on the front 9x16 on the rear

The CS wheels were last used on the 1989 Turbos

Design 90's were on the car when I bought it last year, but were not good - repainted many times over. Looking at the original (4 Turbo Sales brochure - indeed it does say Design 90's, but 7.5J X 16 front and 9X16 rear. I do prefer the CS wheels - sharper to look at on the car but I appreciate not original equipment. There is in fact a set of Design 90's with Contis on eBay now - 225/50/16 & 255/45/16 - off a 964. Would these larger rears work OK on the 944T do you think?
Thanks

The tyres will physically fit with no problem but the 255/45 has a 1.4% increase in diameter over the standard 245/45 tyre and consequently your speedometer will under read by 1.4% so be careful around speed cameras.

The main detail to clarify is the width of the wheels themselves. Standard D90s for a 964 will have had narrow 6 inch rims at the front. Ideally you want 7 or 7.5 for the front of a 944T

Result!
Managed to source a set of rare Silver Rose wheels (7.5 & 9's) from Porsche Apart. They will take care of doing a quality refurb on them, so they will arrive in a week or so.
Thanks for the advice!

Good stuff. I was going to say I thought the Silver Rose cars had the CS wheels as well. Don't forget to post pics!!

SR cars had the light weight forged alloys as standard

The design is not by chance either, they are designed to `suck` more air in to aid cooling the brakes.

I bought some refurbed cast D90s from Porscheapart this year and i have to say whoever they use for refurbing is superb, you will be pleased[:)]

Are not the forged CS wheel the same as the SR forged wheel? How many different varient D90-look wheel are there?

Yes they are the same - 7" front and 9" rear.
'88 & '89 928 CS and '89 928 GT had CS wheels as well, 8" front and 9" rear.

As far as I know there are five D90 variants : 6", 7", 7.5", 8" and 9".

That really encouraging - I'm sure they will make a great job of them.

As a follow up, my CS wheels have arrived and P Apart have done a superb job.

I now need a set of tyres and am looking at Bridgestone S02 rears at £119.40 and fronts @ £92.10 delivered incl vat. from Mr.Tyres.

Bridgestone only do 245/45 in S02's (Turanza ER 30 aren't supplied in 245/45ZR 16) - so I might have to go the S02 route unless there are others around that can be recommended.

Can anyone suggest any other brand I ought to be looking at? eg Nankang NS-1, Toyo Proxes, Hankook Ventus?

Thanks

As an aside would you mind posting pictures of your refurbished wheels ?

I'm running Continental SportContact tyres all round on the exact same wheels on my '89 Turbo. Haven't needed to replace the fronts yet, but the rears recently cost me £130 all-in, including having a guy deliver and fit them at my home.

I was planning to change the rims when I first bought the car, but it handles so beautifully on these standard ones that I decided to keep 'em on!
