need tyre advice

Looking for some advice on replacement tyres for a 997 c4s with x51 powerkit, currently running on bridgestone potenza's.I drive the car quite enthusiasticlly on a&b roads, ie North york moors, north pennines, in all weather often in heavy rain which is unusual for the North east! used to run a 996 c4s cab on michelin pilot sports seemed ok but can't really make a comparison as the cars have quite differant characteristics,
appreciate any views on other makes such as michelin pilot sport or pirelli, also any idea's were to buy in the North east with out having to remorgage the house.
 
All I can say is - I found the Bridgestones to be awful on my previous car - an Audi A8 4.2 quattro - and the improvement from fitting Pirelli PZero Rosso had to be experienced to be believed, especially in the wet when aquaplaning was a serious issue with the Bridgestones. I have a 997tt with the Pilot sports that come as standard (I specified NO BRIDGESTONES!) - but they don't seem to like the cold! (The Pirellis weren't too keen on it either).
 
This car came fitted with the Bridgestones and having no previous experience with them I thought I'd give them a shot.. to be fair I've been really impressed by them.
I will be keeping them on the car when the rears get replaced shortly.. after 10K miles

I had Michelin's on my previous 996TT and they gave me some issues (generating squealing noises!!), they were replaced with Pirellis which I was more than happy with except for the lack of rim protector..

As you say the two models of cars do have different characteristics...

The main 3 'N-rated' tyres are I believe:
  • Bridgestone Potenza
  • Pirelli PZero
  • Michelin Pilot Sport
I too got Bridgestones on my new Turbo. Only complaint after a month of ownership is that the road noise is quite high. May just be because the tyres are new though so need wearing in a little.

The Pirelli are meant to have great grip, but wear out quickly and have high road noise.

I had Michelin Pilots on my old 997 Carrera, and these were pretty awesome (had for 2 years without need to replace).
 
how did you find the bridgestones performance at high speed cornering in the wet, especially now that you have quite a few miles on them, anyway must dash n01 daughters 5th birthday sunday must hunt down a birthday cake with a princess on it or my life won't be worth living.
 
My experience with them in the wet has been good, I think they rated quite well in the EVO test as a wet tyre...

Alex, the TT overall has alot of road noise from tyres as do many of the other 997's within the range... all article during its launch mentioned this.

When I had my new rear P-Zero's fitted just after Christmas I asked the guy at the OPD about the characteristics of the different brands and why different ones are fitted as new. Taking the latter question first, basically Porsche order a batch of tyres and when they run out they go to market again for the next batch and whoever is cheapest that time round wins.

Re: the tyres, he said that the Michelins are the softest and therefore the grippiest but wear the quickest, Bridgestones are the hardest so demonstrate the opposite characteristics of the Michelins and have more road noise, and the Pirelli's are in the middle but closer to the Michelins than the Bridgestones in characteristics.

Mine had Pirelli's fitted when I bought it at 2,500 miles, presumably from new, and I've stuck with them (albeit sourcing them is a nightmare) and I'm happy with them - if for no other reason than I like the little red detail on the sidewall [:)]
 
I started with Continetal's on my fiorst boxster - long wearing but not good grip as for the wet handling....... terrifying

Then moved to Brdgestones on second Boxster and was quite impressed. Lasted very well and gave reasonable grip.

Have Michelin's on the current 997 - Fabulous, fantastic tyres grip is awsome wet or dry. yes they won't last long (7.5k and I am betwen 4 and 5 mm on each rear so 10k seems about right) but they grip they give is phenominal and it suits the character of the 997S especially with the extra lower down grunt (torque) from the x51

Go Michelin - especailly if back road blasts is your thing.

DMS chip gives 20hp+ on the powerkit ie 401 BHP+ small torque increase

Another year on the warranty I am afraid
