Neglected 911

Hi everyone

Looking for some advice. I have a very nice 944 2.7 Lux, however I have located a 911 3.2 Carrera with 104,000 miles on the clock. It has been sitting in a garden for almost 2 years it is in good condition only showing some light signs bubbling. Mainly to the front bumper.Less than 2% of the whole body surface. It has not been started and will obviously require a lot of TLC both inside and out. I am not afraid to get my hands dirty and can handle a spanner. I can get it for £4500. What are your feelings on this is it a good investment or am I biting off more than I can chew.

Cheers
Ronnie

Go for it- at that price, there is not much room for discussion. Even as a braker it makes sense and these cars are quite sturdy.

History with it? Any engine work/gearbox work needed doing?

Hi Ronnie.

I think you should go for it! An average on-the-road 3.2 Carrera with that sort of miles will set you back at least £10k, around £15k for a decent car, so £4500 sounds reasonable for a car of that condition. Have a look inside the rear wheel arches and under the carpets for signs of more serious rust, which will cost you more to repair than just surface rust.

If you want a quote for an engine re-build, then I can recommend RPM Technik in Cheddington. They do a good job looking after my 3.2 Carrera (i'm not as handy with a spanner as perhaps you are!)

Best of luck!

there have been occasions when I've left my 3.2 for over a year with no preparation for being laid up. It has always re-started with out any problem. Better to be left untouched for a while than started up and not run long enough to fully heat through the engine and 'box.
These are tough cars so armed with WD40 a bucket of cleaning stuff and you'll be fine...... depending on the condition that it was in before its was left
for 4.5k you can't go far wrong

Sounds good 'but' check for rust in kidney bowl areas can cost £1800/side to sort properley. Just check why someone would leave in garden for 2 years if nothing wrong with it?
Have to say i would buy it if checks OK for rust[:)]

Hi

Thanks for your input that has sort of made up my mind. There is not much history with it. The current owner has had it since 1998 . It has had 4 other owners. H e seems to know his way aound porsches. He is a haulage driver and had bought the car with just under 80k on the clock. He seems to think that if I put a new battery in it and re prime the oil and fuel filter it will start. He recommends that I put new discs and pads all round due to the period of inactivity. The interior is a wee bit damp but I suppose that is to be expected, however it appears in good condition.

Fill up with fresh fuel too.

Brakes will likely be seized.

Sounds like a bargain, but still have a good poke around. If the body is sound then go for it.
If the body is corroded then I would want to drive it before I bought it and ideally do a leak down test on the engine as doing the body, engine and gearbox could put the total cost way above a really good car.
