New 356 owner - is there anybody out there

Im the owner of an old 987 Boxster that Porsche Swindon have sorted out for me and that I like a lot, so instead of buying a new car that I may not like much more, I've bought a 1964 356C that I'm rather pleased with, but as is always the case with oldies, needs various jobs doing. For example the clock and the steering box are off to be repaired tomorrow.

My question is whether or not there are other 356 owners within reasonable distance of me. I'm on the road to Cirencester from Stroud. I've no idea how common or otherwise 356s are.

Can I invite you to ring Club office on 01608 652911 and speak to Paul Grainger who looks after the Club's wonderful 356.

Our 356 Register Secretary is Fred Hampton who enjoys an international reputation for his knowledge and passion for all things 356. His contact details are in Porsche Post.

I am sure that Paul or Fred would be pleased to help you.

I hope you enjoy your beautiful car.

Hi Ashley

Welcome to the forum and club. Great choice of car, same year and model as mine. Im afraid you wont find much on this forum (I dont understand why) people dont register and post on the forum. As you say always a little job to do, when you have completed them all these little cars are lovely to polish, not a flat panel as you know. Afraid I live in East Anglia so not much use as far as being local for a meet up.

However, keep an eye on Porsche Post for events. As Rob said, club office is not far away and events such as Cotswold Rally (now think re named as St Georges Rally) an Annual BBQ and a Bugatti meet all centre around the Club office at Moreton in Marsh. The 356 European countries have an annual bash. 2017 is Spain, not a million miles away and something to look forward to see https://www.porsche356meeting2017.com/#

Other national events such as this years Silverstone classic at the end of July should see your car in pride of place take a look at http://www.silverstoneclassic.com/

These cars are rare, and a great investment not only in monetary terms but enjoyment of ownership.

You live in one of the best parts of the country to drive one of these wonderful cars, enjoy.[8D]

Me again Ashely.

What I should have added (and should have known better being an RO) is that you will find most events organised by your Local Region. Get along to Club nights which should be held once a month. The Region will also be organsing events in your area for other members in you are to attend. see https://www.porscheclubgb...h-west/gloucestershire

Lovely thanks John. I've phoned Paul Grainger and emailed Fred Hampton, so will see what develops. I get the feeling 356s are few and far between unlike the later cars.

Hi Ashley , just caught up with your post.

In answer to your question , PCGB forum is a bit quiet even though there are several 356 owners in the club , I recommend you visit another ( very active ) online forum , ddk-online.com

DDK is mainly about the pre impact bumper Porsche 911 , but there is a 356 subforum ,
and there are a few 356 enthusiasts in your area !! In order to post to DDK you will have to register.
If I put a post up on the PCGB 356 subforum , I tend to repeat it on DDK as there does not seem to be a lot of readership overlap . There is also a great resource for 356 info in the Porsche356registry , even though it is a US site , a fair number of UK 356 owners are members .

As for me , after starting off with a secondhand 356B S90 back in '68 , I went down the 911 track ( literally , did over 60 trackdays 2002 - 2014 ) in various air-cooled and water-cooled cars , now back to a '64 356C and a '55 356 Continental Outlaw. Feel free to PM me if you get stuck .

Lovey job OT, appreciate your response. I have a 987 and a Healey 3000 as well, but I'm enjoying working on the little 356.

Hi Ashley,
Just caught your post. What a stunning 356. I've become a real admirer of this model. Absolutely beautiful.
Have you any more photos to share?

I hope to have photos tomorrow once I've finished reassembling it. I've had the steering box rebuilt, replaced all the track rod ends and the steering damper, fixed the clock and the radio and next week it goes in to have the interior stripped out and replaced with a new red one from Lakewell.

I've gone right through my 356 and completely rebuilt the steering including a steering box overhaul by ICS of Birmingham. I'm fairly sure it's close to as they were, which is pretty amazing. Until now the Bentley MK VI is my best car of all time. A good one is near silent compared to moderns, they drive and ride as well too. They're a joy but not one most even know about because they aren't sporting enough and R-R's arent known as handling - who cares about the chauffeu.

The Porsche 356C is as impressive. It's comfortable, the ride is exceptionally good, the cornering and handling are excellent, so apart from the absence of power and lack of aircon, it is arguably a better car for awful Brit roads than modern Porsche's with track day suspension. I don't enjoy them, but I do love a fast drive across French B roads and there my little 356 would be perfect. Fifty three years after it was made.

Wonderful! Yours looks lovely John. I'm glad there are others, I was feeling very alone.

The next job is to strip out the interior, remove all rust, treat it and paint it, respray dashboard and fit a new red interior from Lakewell. I've got the radio and clock work, so just have to sort out keys for the glove box and gear lever.

I made lifelong friends with my Bentley MK VI, I organised trips to various parts of France for '46-'55 R-R&B and Bristols and we used it for family transport and the kids marriages. It was a very good old car, but I needed a change and something a bit special, certainly not a later R-R. My mother took against them after Max Bygraves and Liberace bought them and they're B awful to drive.

Therefore I'm hoping to find some 356 owners and go to any events on offer, track days excepted.

PS. Which is region 24 :(

Thanks for the frightful tune. I knew that Billy Cotton was a Brooklands racer as was Jack Warner and that Elsie and Doris Waters had an 8 litre Bentley, but my mum wasn't logical.

My uncle and mother's brother was a struggling artist until he painted a successful portrait of lady Astor. To celebrate he bought an Alvis Grey Lady, which she approved of, but then he changed it for a MK 8 Jaguar. That wasn't popular at all and he got no sympathy at all when he crashed it and nearly got killed. It wouldn't have happened if he'd bought a respectable car. Mad logic, my family could have been inspiration for Ealing comedies, yet when mum died the church was packed and the graveyard too. People seemed to like her.

Here she is as a Land Girl in WW2, shed joined the Fire Brigade in London and learned to yodel and play a piano accordion, but they needed Land Girls on my grand father's estate and everyone hated the yodelling.
