New 944 owner power steering help

Hi all

Well I've just collected my first 944 from Tim (AirCooledExcellence) and its a dream. Pulls like a dream and corners on rails. Even the clock works.

The only gripes seem to be light bushing wear (axle or AR Bar, not decided yet), and the power steering is squeeking when moving at low speed and using near full lock.

Other than checking fluid is topped, is there a grease port I should lube or any other such maintenance that can be performed with it in situe.

I'm off to find a Bentley manual now.

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks
Adam

Nice to see the car staying on the forum. [:)]

PS does tend to make a few noises on full lock, not necessarily worth panicking over.

Excuse me for hijacking the thread, but in a similar vein - why is the copper (horn) contact strip behind the steering wheel so noisy? I have a horrid 'scrapey' noise whenever I turn the wheel. Do they all do this?

My steering made exactly that noise - it was the belt slipping - I replaced the belt and it went away. Any other time its made a noise it was low on fluid as I have a slow leak which I will fix sometime.... soon...ish.

Ghost: This might be what happens when the bearings for the steering shaft go? Usually when the steering wh

Cheers all

Its too loud to be normal, but I have a spare belt with the car and will fit if the fluid isn't low.

Good to join the community and keep the car here.

Sounds like the noise mine makes, kind of a screech. Sounds like a slipping belt but louder. Mine only does it when the fluid is hot (hot weaher, slow driving in traffic for a bit) and I steer while moving very slowly (parking). I've got a rebuild pump ready to go on so I'll see if that cures it. I am thinking it might be the fluid creeping from the high pressure side of the pump back into the low pressure side when the steering is under load and the fluid is thinned down through heat.

No they don't all do it.

However mine started doing it once (shortly after I had the wheel off to do something) and a quick spray of Holts rubber and silicon lubicrant has shut it up for years now.

It's also worth draining all of the PAS fluid by pulling the pipe off at the pump and refilling with fresh then turning the wheel from lock to lock until all the air bubbles are expelled. Chances are the fluid is very old and never been changed.
