New 944 Owner

Welcome Mike! [:D] Oil gauge at 5 bar is most likely to be the pressure switch, as this is the result usually (not always) when it fails. Try that first as will be the cheapest and easiest fix [;)]

Hi Mike! Region 3 NorthEast meet every 2nd Wednesday of the month at the Dun Cow at Bournmoor. Feel free to come along we have a few 944 owners you could chat to.

New Porsche owner completely, in fact. Sorry if this is in the wrong place, I couldn't see a dedicated welcome forum.

It's a 944 NA 2.5L Lux, made in 1988. I have a 1967 Triumph GT6 as my weekend/show car, the 944 will be my daily and will live on the street. I wish I had a double garage to protect both of these wonderful vehicles. Apparently it's lived outside most of its life anyway with very little rust, little bit of bubbling on the nearside front wing that I'll tackle in time but that's it for rust. The sills have been fixed and welded up already with new steel so I don't have to worry about them. The belts were done by the previous owner recently. It has Turbo Twist (I think that's what they're called?) alloys and very wide tyres which I like a lot. It has side skirts which are not original, but again I like them a lot. It has a non-standard exhaust which I do NOT like a lot.. I will put a proper one on later that doesn't fart like a chav-spec corsa. Urgh.

The bad points:

* The oil pressure gauge always shows 5 regardless of the actual pressure.. this can't be normal? Knackered gauge most likely.
* The voltmeter sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. Whenever it feels like it. Same gauge as the oil pressure.

* The drivers door does not centrally lock but the motor works, I'm aware of how to fix it and already ordered the plastic rod.
* The drivers door window does not work, it's the switch and I've already ordered a new one.
* The clock is knackered. I'm aware of how to fix it and will do so.
* It has no stereo.
* The stereo wiring has been chopped to bits, but I'm electrically trained and it'll be fun restoring it.
* The door speakers are broken. New speakers required.

* It has a horrible garish aftermarket gear knob which buzzes and rattles like crazy. Pretty sure it's missing the rubber gaiter or it's simply not sitting securely, it stops if I grab the top firmly.

The good points:

* Mechanically it's sound as a pound on a merry-go-round. No gearbox issues. No engine issues. Belts done. No leaks.
* The previous owner gave me tons of spares including some rather expensive switches. Go go gadget eBay!
* Most of the "work" needing doing to it is purely cosmetic.
* It has pretty good MPG for a sports car!
* The handling is the best I've felt in any car. Ever.
* The electric seats work flawlessly.
* It has the JMG Short Shift Kit fitted by the previous owner.

All in all, I absolutely love the car and look forward to driving it every time I open the door and turn the key.

I swapped it for an obscure 1990's Honda. No money changed hands. Very happy. [:)]

Eee Moira doesn't miss a trick does she! It sounds like it's fundamentally good and just needs a few cosmetic bits doing which you're on top of. Pop along to a meeting and say hi!

Thanks folks. I'll definitely come along to the NE section meet! Looks like I only just missed this months. That little grille on the dash, left of the clock, has a tiny break in mine. That'll drive my car interior focused OCD utterly mad. Anyone know what that is and if you can get them?

You can download the appropriate parts diagram from here: [link=http://www.porsche.com/uk/accessoriesandservice/classic/genuineparts/originalpartscatalogue/]http://www.porsche.com/uk/accessoriesandservice/classic/genuineparts/originalpartscatalogue/[/link] Then if you go to the "Fast Part Finder" on Design 911's website and type in the part number you'll get an up-to-date(ish) price too. If you order bits from Newcastle OPC and pay over the phone, Ged will usually bring them to the monthly meeting for you too (and if you join the club you get a discount on parts too).

The oil pressure gauge can also read at max if the wiring connections are transposed on it's terminals.

That little grill by the clock is the cover in front of the 'sniffer fan' (I think that's the right term?) for climate control. I'd guess you can still get from OPC for little money. It twists off - counter-clockwise I think

ORIGINAL: 944 man Id be worried about what is under the aftermarket sills.
I was worried too, but the guy sent me a full picture documentation of the work he did on them. Before he did the work they were awful, with holes you could put your hand through! Talking about the outer sills mind you, the inners are fine. He cut away all the bad metal and replaced it with good metal, coating the inside with waxoyl and the outside with stonechip. He's also a long time member of another forum I go to and is well trusted, I would be very surprised indeed if the sills were bad, he's a very good and experienced welder.
