New 964 - now, which oil?

Collected my 964 C4 Coupe on Thursday. Love it already. What a machine. Still getting to know it, obviously, but it drives every bit as well as I'd hoped.

Now, what oil is everybody using? I notice the owner's handbook lists a wide range of SAE values, but I imagine that by now, owners will have settled on a consensus as to the best oil?

Many thanks

Hi Mate - glad to hear you have bought a 964. Do you have any pics??? :)

This is the oil I use. I am sure others will be on to give advice as well.

That's the one... or the equivalent Castrol Magnatec some/many indies use.

Now your project just begins...[:D]

Hi I use the same! Mobil Super 10 40 very happy with it, changed oil and filter last week on my own 964 adjusted valves and changed power steering belt. engine nice and clean inside. I have used this for years on customers 964s unless they have ask for something else. Berny.

The other thing you can do is see from the previous paperwork the garage which did the maintenance on the car and give them a call asking what engine oil, brake fluid and power steering fluid they fitted so when you top it up you are topping up with the same lubricants. Normally they are pretty helpful as you may give them business in the future. I use Mobil 1 in my 993.

+ 1 on mobil s semi sin 10/40 changed every year or 3000 miles comes out as clean as it goes in well not quiet but clean

Use a 10w/40 the mobil 0w/40 is to thin and will find any potential leaks due to low usage and the seals slightly shrinking through lack of use.

A million 'what oil should I use?' threads dotted around. One of the better/best being the long chain and response from a guy at Opie (think originally from Renlist thread) - Steve may have the url to hand. Views can get very technical with stacks of opinion. However, interestingly we all end up back to a Mobile 1/whatever semi 10W40 recommendation...

Why semi Synthethic and not full synthetic?

I use full synthetic 5W40 and it works great for me.

These which oil threads tend to go round in circles as there doesn't appear to be a definitive answer. I've yet to see anyone report that using a specific oil killed their engine. Saying that, I once tried 10W60 mobil motorsport and the car felt horrible (sluggish) and got very hot in traffic. I soon removed it!

Many thanks, everyone. I've got the Mobil Super 10w 40 you've recommended.

Incidentally, Steve, (anorak point here) my M3 took 10w 60 - the only car I've known to do so.

Thanks again

Yes, apparently M series are one of the few that 10W60 is good for. The linked Opie oils article below not only mentions it being appropriate for M series (and a few others) but also describes all the bad symptoms I detected when I had it (briefly) in the 964:

I had our C4 in for MOT (straight through) and oil service at Leicester Porsche Centre, the Technician has a 964 himself, I asked them for the popular Mobil Semi synth that most people use and I swear I can feel the difference...?,Tickover was smoother and the car just felt better,it's not been that many miles and 12 months since its last drop, just can't believe the difference after an oil drop, deffo not in my head!It had brand new Calipers at the front aswell so the whole car feels peachy now![:)]
