Hi everyone,

Just picked up a new to me 981 Cayman S 2014 with 37k on the clock from a local used dealer. Absolutely love it but while checking things over I spotted a few rust / corrosion issues under the bonnet and I was wondering if this is normal or if its something I should bring up with the dealer?

The car apart from this is amazing and has reignited the spark I had for motoring thats been missing for many years :)

Thanks for any guidance anyone can give me on this too.

All the best,

R

Hi Rikki,

Welcome to Cayman ownership and the forum. I assume that you’re looking under the plastic cover in the front boot where slight water ingress is always a possibility, especially after 8-years of use?

I wouldn’t worry about the corrosion and evidence of minor surface rust, although if it bothers you just treat it with some proprietary deruster. I doubt that the dealer will be interested in doing anything about it … “They all do that sir”.

Just enjoy driving the car!

Hey Jeff,

Thanks for the reply and putting my mind at ease. Yes its under the scuttle panel at the bulkhead.

I was worried as my 986 BS and 987 CS never had these issues (and it was a 14 year old 987 I traded against this newer one) and with the car costing £41,500 and being Porsche Approved I thought it was a bit off to find rust components sitting there.

There were a multitude of other issues with the door trim hanging off, broken rear hatch button etc that are being looked at but this one caught my eye as it looked the worst and not an easy fix.

Bar that LOVE the car, my first PDK and just a joy to drive!

Thanks again and all the best!

Hi Rikki,

Considering it’s a Porsche Approved car it’s disappointing to hear that there were a number of issues that hadn’t been picked up by the dealer. It doesn’t say much for their “thorough” 111-point check!

Like you I can’t say that I’ve noticed that sort of corrosion on my 987.2 CS, but it seems that quality has taken a tumble with the later cars. At least yours appears to have top coat paint in the under bonnet area, which according to recent posts seems to be lacking there and elsewhere on the latest 718 cars.
